BT Sport capture moment Stockport fans heard Boreham Wood get late equaliser vs Wrexham

BT Sport capture the moment Stockport County fans heard that Boreham Wood get a late equaliser vs Wrexham to boost their title hopes.

The Hatters ensured they finished Bank Holiday Monday top of the National League table with a narrow 1-0 victory at Chesterfield.

Paddy Madden netted the only goal from the penalty spot just before the break and the Spireites couldn’t find a way back.

The spot-kick was awarded after the ref adjudged Calvin Miller of handling the ball, after a free-kick had at first been awarded.

Chesterfield had opportunity for an equaliser in the 90th minute, but Stockport goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe was on hand to prevent Jeff King from scoring.

The game was attended by 9,198 fans, including over 2,500 Stockport fans. This was the Spireites’ biggest crowd since they were relegated to the National League.

Wrexham’s automatic promotion hopes suffered a blow after Tyrone Marsh’s 89th-minute penalty saw them draw 1-1 at 10-man Boreham Wood.

Paul Mullin’s hit a brilliant volley and this looked like a huge three points for Wrexham, though Marsh levelled from the spot right at the end after Tyler French’s foul on Kane Smith.

Wrexham stay second in the table but slip to three points behind leaders Stockport County, who have a game in hand.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson: “Very frustrated. We controlled it, weren’t clinical enough to go and get the second or third. We should have been out of sight with the possession we had around the box. We just needed someone to be a bit more ruthless.

If you can’t get the second you make sure you see the game out. Tyler has got to stay on his feet. It’s a poor decision, he knows that. He’s a very good player – he’s honest. That’s proved a costly moment for us.

“We will get ready to go again – we have a great game next week. It’s a setback, we can’t hide away from that. We need to regroup and go again.

“The odds are against us, we know that, but we have to make sure we get the second or third spot and go up through the play-offs. I think we are capable of doing that.”

Stockport boss Dave Challinor said he isn’t bothered if his side got some ‘luck’ in their win against Chesterfield.

“In the second-half we had to roll our sleeves up because these are a good team,” Challinor said as reported by Derbyshire Times.

“They have lost big players (to injury).

“This was a big win because this is a tough place to come.

“We have had to defend, I wouldn’t say ride our luck, but Ben (Hinchliffe) has had to make saves which you would hope he would do.

“If we have had a little bit of luck I am not bothered. I would not say that lots of things have gone our way in the last three or four weeks…today maybe it has.”

“We knew that if we came here today and won that we would have the opportunity to go to Wrexham to win the league on Sunday and that was our sole focus,” Challinor added. “We have done that, we have given ourselves a chance.

“I believe in us that we are good enough to get out of this league but there is no good me believing it if they don’t believe it, they have got to back themselves individually.”
