Bruno Fernandes breaks his silence over his shock penalty miss as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blames it Aston Villa players.
The 27 year old Portuguese has admitted he is frustrated and disappointed with blasting his spot kick in the late stages of Saturday lunchtime’s Premier League defeat to Villa.
Manchester United put in a poor performance throughout the fixture, looking disjointed under pressure from an inspired Dean Smith side who were well worth a result. Villa took the lead in the 88th minute with a header from defender Kortney Hause.
There was VAR controversy with the goal, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggesting it should not have stood because Villa striker Ollie Watkins was impeding the view and movement of David de Gea whilst standing in an offside position.
“Nobody is more frustrated and disappointed than me for missing the penalty and the consequent defeat,” Fernandes said on Instagram.
“I’ve always assumed my responsibilities and I’ve always embraced them under pressure in moments like this. Today, I failed. But I took a step forward and faced the challenge with the same ambition and responsibility as when, on the many other occasions, the ball ended up in the net.
“Criticism and contrasting opinions are a big part of football. I’ve learned to live with it, even using them to drive me on, and I consider it all a very important part of my commitment to never stop trying to improve.
“Today I once again took the responsibility given to me almost since I joined United and I will take it again without any fear or dread whenever called upon.
“Thank you for all your support after the final whistle! Hearing you chanting my name in the stadium was very emotional.
“I will come back stronger for me, because these are the standards I hold myself to, but most of all for my teammates and our fans who have always supported us.”
According to Solskjaer, Aston Villa’s players are to blame for the midfielder’s woeful attempt in stoppage time.
“First of all, the way they get around the penalty spot, around Bruno and all that, that’s not to my liking, but I do understand it, it shouldn’t be that way.
“Bruno is normally very good in those positions and unfortunately just missed this one. It doesn’t get into Bruno’s head, he’s strong mentally and he’ll step forward again.
“Today you would back Bruno with your mortgage. What I didn’t like was the way they crowded the penalty spot. It clearly worked for them but that’s not great to see. They achieved what they wanted to.”

Fans reacted as Bruno Fernandes breaks his silence over the penalty miss whilst Solskjaer blames Aston Villa players…
@saturnion13: “No excuses for my penalty miss today” and then proceeds to give the longest excuse of all time
@MUFC_redarmy99: You’re brilliant. We love you. If everyone worked as hard as you we’d win the lot. Our Portuguese maginifico
@UgwunnaEjikem: Players need to stop this BS, the other day Aguero, another day Lingard now it’s Bruno. I may understand it if you do a Karius in a UCL final or a Gyan at the World Cup semis, not some random league game or UCL first group game, just move on & play better next time. Shikena!
@GoatIsgone__: It happens to the greatest of players and this was a premier league game not a cup final. Not that deep. Your still one best midfielders in the world
@StokeyyG2: ngl mate i can’t be arsed to read that but just next time score init cuz I’ve chucked u in fpl
@fkhanage: Ronaldo forced you to type that didn’t he. You’re done.
@OBaStann: I’m convinced writing long essay is one of the first requirement of being a Manchester United player
@markgoldbridge: Sort the midfield out Bruno
@penny2456: Villa players ran around, tackled my players , didn’t let us score a goal instead, they scored, I don’t like it
@Sarcastic__kid: The fact that Ole doesn’t talk anything abt transitions and how we lack playing as a team, is irritating.
@andycCAFC: Don’t get pens cry. Get pen miss and then cry the opposition gathered round the penalty spot. Really. They are pros they are use to that. Stop moaning bout everything
@Ash_Singh84: This guy is pure comedy! Blamed Klopp for not getting pens, blamed villa for Fernandes missing a pen, blamed the officials for a legitimate goal. And there’s not a chance he decides who takes pens.
A clown at the old Trafford circus #MUNAVL
@alex_metcalfe97: Would be brilliant if he could channel the energy he’s used this week around penalties into coaching a team that doesn’t rely on getting one to win a game
@Andrewprice1: Immature & unprofessional comments. Disappointing display from a bad loser. Show some respect.
@AV_georgia: Doesn’t get into his head but unhappy with the villa players, mate he was RATTLED shut up
@KyleDrinane: Stop crying. This is embarrassing
@DaveTheKing21: All this guy does is moan. You moaned about not getting penalties and you got one. Now you’re moaning about what the other team did which is what your team would have done.
