Brighton’s Glenn Murray explains why West Brom and Leeds ‘don’t deserve to be promoted’

Brighton’s Glenn Murray explains why West Brom and Leeds ‘don’t deserve to be promoted’ in an interview with Sky Sports this week.

Both the Premier League and Championship are pushing for a return to action in mid-June.

It was recently announced that there will be a further delay on a possible season resumption after being advised not to commence full training until the 25th of May.

Curtailment is a possibly after clubs learned that full squad training as a group is not recommended until towards the end of May, meaning hopes of restarting early June looks unlikely.

Sources have suggested that if it does resume it may not be until mid to late June – or even early July in a worst case scenario – until the league is in a position to conclude the campaign.

Senior club officials insist it will take more than three weeks for players to reach match fitness.

Norwich City sporting director Stuart Webber has stated that the Championship needed to be completed alongside the Premier League for relegation and promotion to be allowed.

“Our standpoint is if the games get played, the worse three teams in the league get relegated. That is plain and simple, it always will be and hopefully it will be in this case as well,” he told Sky Sports’ Football Show.

“My only thought on that is the Championship. If we manage to play our games in the Premier League, whoever finishes in the bottom three deserves to go down, but to be relegated you need the Championship to finish their games. If they don’t finish their games, they don’t deserve to be promoted.

“We’re talking about fairness and we’re trying our best to get the Premier League season, nobody wants it voided. All the players agree the bottom three sides are the worst in the division and deserve to go down but if the clubs below us in the Championship aren’t finishing their season, why should they get promoted?

“If the Championship is finished, brilliant. Whoever finishes in the bottom-three places and whoever wins the playoffs and finishes in the top-two in the Championship gets promoted but if the Premier League finishes and we get relegated without them kicking a ball then I can’t see that it’s a fair way for things to finish.”
