Brian Barry-Murphy describes Cardiff’s 1-0 defeat to Burton ‘sickening’ with Bluebirds fans left embarrassed by it.

Cardiff suffered consecutive home losses as Burton secured their first away win of the season with a late goal from Charlie Webster in the 82nd minute to move off the bottom of the League One.

Despite Cardiff dominating with 20 shots and 77% possession, they failed to convert chances, with Burton’s goalkeeper Brad Collins making key saves.

There was also a controversial disallowed goal by Yousef Salech which added to Cardiff’s frustrations.

The result sees Cardiff missing out on the chance to go top of League One, sitting 4th with 20 points from 10 games played, three points behind leaders Bradford City.

Brian Barry-Murphy said, per Wales Online: “When you lose a game of that nature it’s pretty sickening. We are all disappointed. We created enough chances to win any game.

“But when you play against a team like Burton who defended so deep with so many numbers, and you don’t score the goals you feel you should, there’s always an opportunity for them to score at the end of the game and they did.

“We created more chances than we did in any other game this season, but it doesn’t really mean anything when you lose the game. The frustration for the players and the staff is evident, we just have to know how to turn that dominance into wins and that’s the objective as the season goes on.

“The team served him pretty well. We had an enormous amount of crosses, we could have crossed the ball even more. The quality of our crosses were inconsistent, but the good-quality crosses we put into the box, Yousef looked really dangerous.

“You saw in the first half, Chris Willock crossed for him to score – that wasn’t a free-kick. His movement was exceptional, that’s the type of striker he is. You saw glimpses of what he can do.

“His movement was brilliant. That’s what an elite striker does. He’s taken the defender to the near post and lost him really quickly off the back post.

“The cross was perfect and it was a brilliant finish. It was clearly a goal, but we had enough chances to win the game, so I wouldn’t be looking at the referee as the person responsible for us not winning the game.”

Burton boss Gary Bowyer said, per South Wales Guardian: “The credit all goes to the players because Saturday wasn’t the standard, it wasn’t what we’re about and we knew we were coming to a very, very difficult place, they’ve got a great manager, the way they are coached, the way that they play.
