Brentford have the most bizarre kick-off routine in English football

Viewers have this week decided to mock Brentford who have a kick off routine which is dubbed the ‘most bizarre in English football’.

The Bees have secured their place in the playoffs for a second straight season under Thomas Frank, however as well as their performance, it’s how they start the games that is really getting people talking.

They look set to finish the Championship campaign in third after defeating relegation candidates Rotherham United on Thursday evening.

Bryan Mbeumo scored the only goal of the game as Brentford emerged 1-0 winners.

But since then, a clip has emerged on Twitter from the game which is getting a lot of attention. It features Brentford’s strange routine to kick-off the game, and it wasn’t the only time they have done it this season.

Mark, a Derby fan, wrote with a caption for the video: “When you are desperate for Brentford to take this game seriously and this is how they kick off”.

There isn’t a right or wrong way to begin a football match, some pass the ball back and retain possession, while others smash it forward in order to win territory.

As seen in the clip, Brentford did a bizarre variation of the latter, passing the ball back to Brentford’s centre midfielder, who then stopped for a short moment while his teammates charged forward.

The player was then ball then flicked the ball up before hitting it with full force up in the air in the hope that one of his teammates would be able to win the header.

It must be working because they insist on doing it again and again as someone has shown in a compilation video of them doing the very same thing.

If Brentford gain promotion to the Premier League, we all might have the pleasure of seeing their unique kick-off tactic more often.

The video from the Rotherham game has gone on to be viewed over 300,000 times and picked up over 10,000 likes in the process of going viral.

Fans reacted at seeing Brentford have the most bizarre kick-off routine in English football…

@hazzacarter: @Kenzema wtf is this all about? 🤣 seen them do it against Cardiff too?!

@Kenzema: Don’t even know. We have the worst kick off routines ever. Clearly we’ve run out of ideas 😂

@arnie_booth: Happy to report that it travelled more than 10m forward and so was a valid kick off… in rugby union.

@JamieMeehan10: This is the most Brentford thing I’ve ever seen

@PubOnEachCorner: We’ve always done that… Fucking hate it

@Sagsy01: Bit different

@DannyEden11: If he’d ever played one bounce at school he would be so much better at this. The scenes when it twatted some little kid on the head and the ball got took off you even tho u stole it anyway was elite.

@TK168_: when a year 11 asks for a touch

@Ben_Conwayy: I’d be shying away from the resulting header

@Swabyneil: Immense!!

@timsrunworld: Imagine having the balls to try that v. Wimbledon when Vinnie was there. Red card in the first 5 seconds…or at least a lengthy wait and then hospital visit for the keepie uppie proponent…Reckon they’d play rock, paper, scissors or maybe shortest straw to see who does it! 🤣

@miketangowhisky: It’s more annoying how shit he is at it

@shawnsanon17: This is hilarious 😂

@ellscunningham_: What is this madness

@DimitriSalavaci: I rate Brentford even more than I already did wow this is incredible

@liam_curran1: Games should always start like this

@dezroberts1: Hahaha kind of kick offs you do in training ffs 😂😂😂

@AFCDylan_: They might be onto something here…

@HarryMcKenny14: Sunday league vibes

@Jontycpfc: This is better than the shit cross field balls 99% of teams do tbf

@ArifNessa: Nah I’m crying wtf is this looool

@slumsden89: 😂😂😂😂 should start all games like that!

@BernardQuack: Dont think this us daft at all. With Toney running full pelt at you, it puts a defence under pressure in the first couple of seconds. I dont know why more teams dont do something like this or kick for touch rugby union style. Its immediate pressure

@ForeverAYellow: What is this kick off routine from Brentford hahaha

It comes three weeks after Oldham Athletic managed to stun Colchester United with the most bizarre free-kick routine you’ll ever see.

A goal thriller took place at Boundary Park with Davis Keillor-Dunn scoring twice in added time to help the Latics secure a 5-2 win over the U’s in League Two.

It’s always enjoyable when a team go out on a limb with a unique free-kick routine, especially when you don’t know if it’s going to be amazingly brilliant or hilariously awful.

Oldham however can be relieved that it worked as a few players did all they could to disrupt the goalkeeper before it was taken, with a pinpoint strike finding it’s way in off the post, watch it for yourself below…
