Brace from Darren Fletcher’s son Jack sees Man Utd U21s score three goals inside six minutes at Barnsley in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.
The Premier League club’s youngsters came back from 2-0 down in 80th minute to go on and win 3-2 in what played out to be quite the extraordinary match.
Barnsley were on the verge of taking all three points, with Vigal Yoganathan scoring twice in the first half, until Travis Binnion’s squad produced a shock comeback that no one saw coming.
On 81 minutes, Ethan Ennis managed to pick up a through ball from midfield, with his effort going into the bottom-left corner to pull one back for Manchester United.
Jack Fletcher then struck one from range on 84 minutes, beating Killip in the Barnsley net to level the scoring.
Then in the 86th minute, Fletcher got his second and United’s third of the game, picking up the ball in the centre of the box, and a powerful effort clinched all three points.
Barnsley also had Corey O’Keeffe sent off for an off-the-ball incident in injury time.

Barnsley starting XI: Killip, Russell (Marsh, 45), O’Keeffe, Benson (Nejman, 45), Lofthouse (McCann, 73), Gent (Dyer, 45), McCarthy, Bland, Wilkinson (Barratt, 67), Lopata (C), Yoganathan
Subs not used: Smith, Barratt, Alker
Man Utd starting XI: Heaton; Ogunneye, Jackson, Fredricson, Amass; Collyer (C), Devaney; Curley, Mather, Ennis; Wheatley.
Substitutes: Harrison, Aljofree, Nolan, J.Fletcher, Biancheri, Sharpe, Williams.
Barnsley head coach Darrell Clarke said to Barnsley Chronicle after the game: “It ends up a very disappointing night. We’re obviously very young, certainly the second half team. There were promising performances but we let ourselves down in the second half and certainly the last 15 minutes.
“I felt it coming. We were carrying one other two passengers. It has to be learning experience because football is ruthless. The challenge to make it in the professional game is very tough. I think this competition is good for giving opportunities but they have to take them.”
On Vimal Yoganathan: “It’s a massive positive. It will do him good. He did very well at Wigan last week and he was a shining light for us tonight.
“Max Watters came off with a tight hamstring on Saturday. That leaves me down to Marshy (Aiden Marsh) and Sam Cosgrove. We wanted to look at something different. They did well. But hopefully we’re not into that much of an emergency situation that we have to do that. Hopefully we get the right players in at the top end.”
On 15 year old defender Oliver Wilkinson, the youngest person ever to start for the club: “He did really well and stood out. We’ve got high hopes for him. If he’s good enough, he’s old enough. He tired a bit but he didn’t do much wrong.”
On Darrell Clarke’s assistant Martin Devaney’s son Jacob playing for United: “It’s a proud moment for Martin. His son is doing fantastic at Man United. But trust me no one wanted to win more than him.”
