Bournemouth take aim at doubters and mock Man City on social media after ending their unbeaten run

Bournemouth take aim at doubters and mock Man City on social media after ending their 32 game unbeaten run which stretched back to December.

Goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson inflicted a first top flight defeat in 2024 on Pep Guardiola’s side on Saturday afternoon.

Just two minutes in, Ederson was forced into a double save to first prevent Semenyo from scoring, and then Justin Kluivert from the follow-up.

Then on 9 minutes, Semenyo turned and found the bottom corner for his fourth of the season after being picked out by Milos Kerkez.

Man City struggled going forward, going a whole first half without a shot on target.

A superb save from Ederson kept out Evanilson from doubling the hosts’ lead shortly after the start of the second half, however the Brazilian made sure he was getting on that scoresheet after 64 minutes, making early contact with a ball brilliantly ran and crossed by Kerkez to catch the City stopper out.

Ilkay Gundogan sent in a cross to meet the head of Josko Gvardiol, only for it to prove to be just a consolation goal, although set up a tense ending, it just wasn’t City’s day when Haaland guided a simple shot onto the post from point-blank range at the end.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola said, per Sky Sports: “It feels great. It’s very difficult to beat City. You have to enjoy this today; tomorrow we will start to think about Brentford.

“Apart from the result, I’m very proud of the performance. To beat them deservedly is even more difficult and even if we suffered until the end, I think we deserved this one.

“I’ve lost so many times against him [Guardiola], so you have to enjoy when the day arrives!

“It is the first Premier League game they lost in 2024 and we are in November. You have to enjoy it because you know it’s not going to happen a lot.”

Andoni Iraola to BBC Match of the Day: “It was a great game. We did everything we could. We needed our very best performance and not the greatest game [from City] and that happened. It is very good to beat City and even better to beat them deservedly.

“It is very difficult. They are a great team. They have amazing subs and you have to suffer, stay compact. We suffered after a good game. We had the chance to finish it and not suffer too much at the end, but now we have to enjoy it.”

On Antoine Semenyo and Milos Kerkez: “They played very well the last few games and today they had the finishing product. Milos had two assists, we felt he deserved to get the numbers and I am happy as it was a complete performance., Defensively, not only them but overall, to beat a team like City you need everyone to play really well and today they did.”

On beating Arsenal and Manchester City in successive games: “It is difficult but we have shown on our day we can create chances. We know there are better teams than us but it is not easy to play here and we have to keep this level so everyone knows that when the come here it will not be an easy game.”

Man City manager Pep Guardiola: “We could not match up the intensity of Bournemouth, who had six or seven days. There was less recovery from the trip from London.

“We talked about that, we had to increase our duels in that position. They had chances, we created some especially at the end. And we had our momentums, but the long balls, we could not defend them and when that happens, you have to defend so deep.

“The guys gave everything. After nine years together, I know they gave it but not enough to compete against that team in that moment.

“Kyle Walker has trained 16 days and not done a single session. He made an incredible effort. Yesterday was the first time we trained as a team. Manuel Akanji couldn’t play in the last game because of a niggle. Nathan Ake is in the wars and made an incredible effort.

“It’s not just about that, but when you are in that position you have to do more in concentration and win a little bit more.

“We knew Bournemouth have success in this part of the season and it’s well deserved. In other circumstances we could have defended our unbeaten record.”

Pep Guardiola to BBC Match of the Day: “We knew we couldn’t match the intensity. We have talked about it. It was an open game. We had chances at the end but I congratulate Bournemouth for the victory.

“The 50-50 balls in the middle, the duels, they play this type of game. They are so aggressive. They had six-seven days to prepare. They have physicality and speed, but you have to win these types of situations. And they had chances. Ederson made a good save. We had real good moments at the start of the second half and after that it was difficult to swallow as we were good. After we scored we had momentum and chances but couldn’t score [again].

On injuries and fitness issues: “It is what it is. We have few players with a lot of minutes and a lot of players with no minutes to the balance is a bit uncomfortable. We played good against Spurs but today we could not handle their intensity that they had and that’s why we lost the game.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Bournemouth take aim at doubters and mock Man City on social media after ending their unbeaten run…

@afcbbiffer: I’ve never seen Walker made to look so bang average, Semenyo absolutely bullied him, not even his much talked about pace helped him yesterday! #afcb

@afcbbiffer: We were absolutely superb yesterday & 100% deserved the win, the last 10 mins & the positive stats City gained in that period were not a true reflection! Best ever win, best atmosphere, whole ground on their feet last 30 secs to cheer the boys home!! #afcb

@Supermac71: #afcb probably produced our best performance of our premier league era. Drink it in. To beat Arsenal & City in consecutive home games is mental. Kerkez Semenyo Cook & Eva standouts but all were excellent.

@GuyN72: Wow. What a day. What a performance. Don’t really want to call out a single player but I’m fairly sure that Semenyo has just ended Kyle Walker’s career. UP. THE. CHERRIES. 🍒 🍒🍒🍒 #afcb

@keithmorey: #afcb That really is up there amongst our best ever performances and results! Rarely has a cherry performed as well as Semenyo did today!

@jami8s8: Seeing our centre backs still crashing into the final third with 10 mins to go is something that couldn’t be justified under any other manager but Iraola. I think we saw today why Senesi keeps Huijsen out of the side #afcb

@AFCBtacticos: If you gave Marc Pugh and Charlie Daniels performance enhancing steroids, you’d have got Semenyo and Kerkez today. Haven’t seen City look so troubled so often every time we attacked that side #AFCB

@AFCBMatt85: Finally! It feels damn good to get that first win over City. Hats off to Iraola for being the manager to do it. He really is top class. The whole team were brilliant today but thought Semenyo and Kerkez were exceptional. #afcb

@JJafcb: 7/9 points from city, Arsenal and Villa. Without evanilson we wouldn’t have near that tally. People writing him off too early because he isn’t solanke #afcb

@chriswisey: Antoine Semenyo is one of the best attacking players in the Premier League right now. He was unplayable at times against Man City. I can’t think of many that have developed as quickly as him in the past 18 months in the PL. #afcb

@Jim_AFCB: Well, didnt expect 7 pts from these three tough games. I never thought I would see the 2014/15 team surpassed, but this side are on the way. Certainly the best football in our time in the PL by some way. It’s frustrating that the NUFC, CFC, LCFC games lost us 8 points,… #afcb

@AFCBMatt85: Finally! It feels damn good to get that first win over City. Hats off to Iraola for being the manager to do it. He really is top class. The whole team were brilliant today but thought Semenyo and Kerkez were exceptional. #afcb

@chrisrumbelow1: #afcb can’t remember the last time I was this buzzing after a Bournemouth match. We were superb today, every player did their job. Even the bugler was better than previous years. I’m a big Walker fan, semenyo today ruined him. Kerkez unplayable. What a day
