Bookies favourites to become next Millwall boss

.

We continue our look at the favourites for Millwall manager…

3) GARY ROWETT

Gary Rowett is currently without a job after he was sacked by Stoke City in January last season after failing to mount a promotion challenge, instead took them to 14th before he then departed.

As well as the Potters, the former footballer has previously managed Derby County, Burton Albion and Birmingham City.

Rowett dodged a question from Colin Murray on EFL on Quest about being included on the bookies’ shortlist for the new vacancy at Huddersfield Town, though expressed he’s waiting to find the right club where he can have a lengthly stay at.

He said back in April: “It’s a difficult one in football because sometimes you can get back in pretty quick but it’s not necessarily the right kind of job.

“We’re not going to sit here and be really picky. I’ve worked in League Two and I’ve got no qualms about what level I work at but we’ve been in the Championship for a good few years and had some different types of success, depending on how you define success.

“You end up waiting for what you feel is the right opportunity. You could get that in a month, you could get it in a year.

“I found it difficult after leaving Birmingham and almost waiting for the right chance to come along. It’s a real weird feeling. In most lines of business you can be working the next day and earning money but in football you’re waiting for the right type of one when you can have success.

“We’ve also got a really good team that we’ve built up over a period of time and you want the right type of opportunity when you can take the vast majority of the team. It’s no good me getting a job tomorrow when I can’t take the guys with me.

“I know the guys understand the scenarios but you want us all to go to have the best chance of doing well. It’s so important to have the right alignment with your staff. If you don’t have that it makes it 20 times more difficult.

“It’s the coaching, the analysis, the recruitment, the physical side, the sports science side, the performance side… they have to all be aligned to how you want to play.”

2) CHRIS HUGHTON

Chris Hughton had his contract terminated by Brighton & Hove Albion – the team he won came Championship runners up with in 2017 – on the 13th May despite avoiding the drop from the Premier League.

However he won just three of their last 23 league games and none of their final nine.

He has also managed Norwich City, Birmingham City and Newcastle United (won the Championship with in 2010).

In October 2019, Hughton turned down replacing Nathan Jones as manager Stoke City.

He also said: “I do want to get back in at the highest level that I can but I’m using my time out well and very much making the most of it.

“I’m in the fortunate position, I’m not a first time manager or second time manager that is worried about where the next job is coming from and it’s a very precarious profession that we’re in.

“So, I’m all through all of that. I supposed I would be seen as a more experienced manager now, so I think that takes a little bit of pressure off.”

1) ADAM BARRETT

Adam Barrett has been placed in temporary charge of first team affairs and will lead the side for Saturday’s game against Leeds United at The Den.

He is a former Millwall player and is usually a First Team Development Coach at the Lions.

Barrett is said to be a contender for the Southend United job, something now former manager Neil Harris is listed as the favourite for.

His former clubs to have played for are Leyton Orient, Plymouth, Mansfield, Bristol Rovers, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Gillingham and Wimbledon.
