Bolton player and his Dad appear at court accused of assaulting club bouncer

Bolton Wanderers player Kyle Dempsey, and his Dad, appear at court this week accused of assaulting a social club bouncer.

The 27 year old midfielder is alleged to have assaulted social club doorman Daryl Jarvis, causing actual bodily harm.

The Daily Mail report that Dempsey’s father Michael, a 50-year-old former rugby league professional, faces the same charge.

Michael also faces a second allegation of causing criminal damage to a door at Maryport Labour Club in the Cumbrian town of Maryport.

All charges come following an incident at the venue which happened around 10.40pm on the 16th of July, 2022, after Bolton played a pre-season friendly at Carlisle United’s Brunton Park.

Both men appeared in the dock at Workington Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning, adorning dark suits and white shirts, speaking to confirm their full names, dates of birth and addresses.

Not guilty pleas were entered to the actual bodily harm assault charge on their behalf by a solicitor acting for the father and son during a short hearing.

Pamela Fee, for the prosecution, outlined the circumstances of what she alleged was a ‘group’ attack by Kyle Dempsey and his father, one which she said had been captured on CCTV.

Mr Jarvis, she alleged, had been punched ‘multiple times’ and ‘kneed’ in the face.

The prosecutor added: ‘The injuries sustained are heavy bleeding to his head due to a cut, bruised ribs, suspected broken nose and chipped teeth.’

After listening to the prosecutor, magistrates decided they could retain the case for trial with their power of sentencing in any event of convictions exceeding 12 months imprisonment.

Kyle Dempsey of Magnolia Way in Blackpool and Michael Dempsey from Whitecroft, Maryport both stated that they wanted the case to be handled at Carlisle Crown Court.

They will appear before a judge on the 6th of February, when a plea-and trial preparation hearing will take place.

They were released on unconditional bail by the Magistrates.

After the incident, League One Bolton Wanderers wrote a statement confirmed they were aware of the incident.

‘Kyle Dempsey and his father were enjoying an evening out with their family in their home town of Maryport following Saturday’s pre-season friendly against his former club Carlisle United,’ a spokesman said earlier this summer.

‘During the course of the evening, they were both subjected to an unprovoked assault which left them requiring medical treatment.

‘The Dempsey family will receive the full support of chairman Sharon Brittan, manager Ian Evatt and the club while the incident is being investigated by Cumbria Police.

‘No further comment will be made at this time.’

Kyle Dempsey previously played for the likes of Carlisle United, Huddersfield Town, Fleetwood Town, Peterborough United and Gillingham.

His court appearance also comes three weeks after he shared his frustration after his car was broken into.

He took to Instagram to uploaded a photo of his black car that had the windows smashed.

Kyle reportedly now lives in Manchester and was thought to be out with his car parked when this happened.

He wrote on Instagram: “I honestly have no words for people like this.

“Seven’O’Clock in the morning smashing into my car.”

He wrote another post with a warning to the public over the amount of car crime, adding he had left something valuable in the car but didn’t mention what the item was.

He said: “Anyone in the Manchester area be safe where parking your car.

“Eight months ago, I’ve parked here and the one day I’ve left something valuable in there, it gets smashed into.

“Don’t make the same mistake.”

A few days ago, he spoke on settling at Bolton, injuries and looking forward.

Dempsey said to The Bolton News about finding the net against Barnsley: “The way I am, the positivity I have got, I am not going to give up.

“I know I have been through a tough time with injuries but I know my body and I know I shouldn’t be picking up as many as I have done.

“I have been a bit unlucky with some of the tackles I have been on the wrong end of but now it is just about performing like I did there (at Barnsley) and showing people what I can really do.

“It’s a New Year and it’s going to be a new me. Relax, play my own game, and the rest of it will take care of itself.

“I know I am a good player, I know it is in there. I just need to deliver it on a more consistent basis this year.”

Evatt said of Dempsey: “I am delighted for him, personally, because he has really been through the mill for us,” he said. “He has been here for nearly a year now and suffered with knocks, niggles, nothing major but stuff that has disrupted his momentum. When you get him fit, healthy and in one piece he is capable of performances like that one – energetic, gives us a different dynamic to that midfield area.

“He has been so frustrated that sometimes he tries too hard to make an impact.

“Sometimes you just naturally have to let it evolve and happen.

“I told him to relax and play and he gave us exactly what we wanted. He gave us energy, dynamism, running in behind and put pressure on the opposition.

“He is a good footballer too, and he can score goals, so I am really pleased for him.”
