Blyth Spartans issue update on Gateshead supporter hospitalised after falling ill

Blyth Spartans issue an update on the Gateshead supporter who was hospitalised after falling ill during the two sides’ meeting on Sunday.

The National League North game, at Croft Park at the weekend was halted briefly just before half time after the spectator became ill in the stands.

Robbie Dale and JJ O’Donnell, have been praised for raising the alert and jumped into the crowd to help by making space for the medical staff so they can be in a comfortable position to give treatment.

The elderly fan was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington, but now is said to be recovering at home after being discharged.

The club has also thanked all the staff and players who helped out in the emergency.

The spokesman said: “We would like to put on record our thanks to both sets of physios who provided an extremely fast response, with our own physio Gary Neasham staying with the fan until an ambulance arrived.

“A special mention should also go to players Robbie Dale and JJ O’Donnell who once realising there was something wrong, immediately signalled for help and made space in the stand for the medics to reach the fan.

“It was extremely concerning, but we’re pleased that the fan is now recovering. Incidents like this really put things into perspective and show there are more important things than football rivalries.”

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We had a call from a paramedic at the ground, who requested an ambulance at 4.25pm. It was for an elderly patient who had collapsed in the stands. One ambulance crew attended and took the patient to Northumbria hospital.”

Twitter users reacted as Blyth Spartans issue an update on the Gateshead supporter hospitalised after falling ill…

@BSAFCUltras: Was quite worried, as Robbie and JJ O’Donnell hopped the fence, glad that he’s in a stable condition

@GreekBlyth1899: Wish him a speedy recovery and return home soon.

@wantthe80s: Respect to Robbie Dale for his actions yesterday in assisting our fan who collapsed.

@thompa1967: Hats off to Robbie Dale and Jj O’Donnell but your stewards were fuckin hopeless. Need some training big time.

@twangmackem: Think @DaleRobbie and @JJODonnell23 should take a bow tonight for helping that Gateshead fan at the game. Fair play to both you and thankfully the fan is stable. Here’s hoping he has a quick recovery and gets back to enjoying his football @Blyth_Spartans @GatesheadFC

@Michael_boyle2: Best news of the day!

@consettoldie: Seen it from the other end of the ground. So pleased the person in question is in a stable condition now. Was fearing the worst. Well done to the Blyth players for their reaction and the Gateshead fans for their quick response in alerting the officials.

@CoachChrisD1: Great news, well done to everyone involved in this incident today. Best wishes to the fan and their family 👍🏼

@HeedFan: Well said @JJODonnell23 the result was irrelevant for me after that. Enjoy the win though. Massive respect to all the blyth lads who came over. Lifes more precious than 3pts. Thankfully the guy seems to be much better.

@DavidMakesFilms: Best news but @Blyth_Spartans really need to have a word with their stewards. Shouldn’t have taken @RBlack95 going onto the pitch to get the attention the man needed. Blyth players responded quicker.

@GLanglands: Blyth fan here guys. Just want to say that the guy who ran on to the pitch to draw attention to the emergency is an absolute hero. Don’t know your name sir but I applaud you. Glad to hear the supporter is stable. Good luck for the rest of the season.
