Blackpool end their three-game losing streak with thanks to their opponents Wigan Athletic scoring two own goals in a 2-2 draw.
Ex-Tangerine defender Will Aimson’s own goal two minutes into added time broke Wigan’s hearts as they looked set to come away with all three points and move further away from the League One drop zone.
In the 20th minute, Wigan went ahead, Thelo Aasgaard did brilliantly to dig out a cross from the left, which deflected into Dion Rankine’s path who beat Richard O’Donnell with a first-time finish.
Then just before half time, Wigan doubled their lead when Matt Smith won the ball high up the field, made his way into the penalty area and sent his strike into the bottom corner.
Jason Kerr’s unfortunate own goal on the stroke of half time halved the deficit before.
A deserved hard-fought point. 👌

Blackpool assistant head coach Steve Agnew told BBC Radio Lancashire: “Credit to the payers, they did keep battling.
“Although they were two own goals, we felt that at 2-0 down if we could score the next goal then it gave the players some belief at half-time.
“That goal came, and I thought we deserved it, but we showed tremendous character to get a late equaliser.
“I think it’s a big point. We’re off the back of these three defeats, which is disappointing, and we played with an energy and a togetherness and a spirit and a fighting mentality.”
Blackpool Assistant Head Coach Steve Agnew per the club website: “I’ve just said to the players in there, the performance in terms of character and mentality was really good,” he said.
“To be two goals down and then to come back with one just before half-time, we felt that gave the players belief to go on and get something out the game and possibly go on and win it.
“We kept going from a fitness point of view towards the end, we kept at it and deservedly so got an equaliser.
“There’s a great team spirit in there and they’re a terrific squad to work with and I’m just so pleased for them that they got what they deserved at the end.”
On the importance of the late first-half own goal that ultimately changed the Tangerines fortunes.
“It was a massive goal for the team, because you could just see at two-nil down it is difficult,” he said.
“We had chances to score first-half before the one just before half-time, but it certainly did give the team a lot of belief going into the second half.”
Assistant Head Coach Agnew on his side’s perseverance after they pushed on for an equaliser and eventually found themselves level with seconds to play.
“It was massive because I didn’t think we deserved to lose the game,” he said.
“In trying circumstances, the players dug in and they kept going and showed great fitness levels.
“I think we spoke about getting the full backs forward and Hayden Coulson certainly did that in the second-half towards the end. I think he was the one that crossed the ball before it eventually came to Rob Apter, and the own goal followed.
“The crowd when it’s like that, they were terrific it’s like a twelfth man. Rob’s done well he’s skipped by the full back and forced a mistake by Will Aimson’s that was finished in the back of the net.”
Agnew also provided an update on the injury to Albie Morgan.
“Albie just went down ill,” he said.
“Let’s hope he makes a quick and speedy recovery.”
Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney told BBC Radio Manchester: “It definitely hurts right now.
“I think the biggest disappointment is that we could have killed that game early in the second half, and we didn’t.
“I guess if you don’t then you always leave yourself open to be punished and unfortunately we were.”
🗣️ “We kept going and deservedly got the equaliser.”

Shaun Maloney said to Latics TV: “To concede in the 92nd minute is tough.
“I didn’t like the second half because we didn’t have much control, and it turned into a 50-50 game.
“The biggest frustration was earlier on in the half, we had enough chances to kill that game.
“That’s the biggest frustration. I loved how we played in the first half, but the game became 50-50 in the last half hour.
“The longer the half went, it turned into a game that suited them. In the second half, we had no control.
“In terms of the effort, I couldn’t have asked for any more. On the back of two difficult results, to come and play the way that they did in the first half was good.
“We need to be more decisive and ruthless with our chances. I wish we were more ruthless but in terms of effort and bravery, I can’t ask anymore.”
“We’ve come off a run of two defeats, and I still felt the support from them, even in the tougher moments.
“I’ve given them something to go home with, but I wish it was a couple more points.”
Here’s how fans reacted as Blackpool end a three-game losing streak with thanks to Wigan scoring two own goals in a 2-2 draw…
@daniel_bfc13: cheers for sticking it in your own net twice because we weren’t for scoring x
@Evattsteeth:
Some performance that
Putting the ball in the net 4 times
Must be playing Bolton
@Daniel99241: scoring 4 goals and drawing is some achievement lads 🤣🤣
@ella_jadee_: Feels like a loss. 2 fucking own goals. First half was some of the best attacking football we’ve played. Invited all the pressure the second half. So so frustrating.
@NathBWFC14: Unlucky lads 😂😂😂
@happyPavBWFC: Absolutely comical 🤣🤣
@jackashurst2: Changing the defence caused that, poor subs.
@olliecmusic: Couldn’t of done it without your help, much appreciated
@KAI_B0SH: Sorry but that should be the keepers ball all day long. Aimson has had a nightmare, much like Kerr did in first half stoppage time #wafc
@KAI_B0SH: It is absolutely fucking insane how predictable we are. You knew we wouldn’t win the game when they scored at the end of the first half, and as always, we’ve been proven right. Pathetic end to what should have been a great win. Absolutely raging #wafc
@CalWAFC7: I hate football
@Sophthecatsmum: Looks like Will Aimson never really left us after all!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Rae_Doherty_93: Always loved Aimson 😘😂
@TrottersBlog: Always liked Aimson me..
@oomidave1: Feels like a loss, sat too deep and invited pressure and crosses into the box, should have been out of site with the chances we had #wafc
@WAFCLouis: Completely unavoidable. Not sure whether Aimson hasn’t had the shout, but that’s keepers ball all day. Been great for us all season but he’s had a stinker tonight #wafc
@joeyrex: We’ve got a serious issue atm in the transition defensively and defending out wide. Their wingers always in space and we concede chances at will as we are 10 yards off them. Deserved the point in the end and battled well to the end, but there’s a lot of problems currently.
@kieran_holmes20: Shame we only turned up in 1 half, but deserved that. Should have had a pen to win it too, ref was poor.
@Samuel_P_Currie: Stopped the rot. Clearly low in confidence but we have to build on that momentum at Orient.
@geofffallon: Squad is threadbare.. need recruits in the window . Struggled at times but could have won in the end . Point fair
😑
How the fuck have we not won that 🤦. Bed #wafc pic.twitter.com/BQOPZx3cPU— Josh Buckley (@JoshBuckley90) October 28, 2024
