Birmingham 2-2 Sheffield Wednesday: Boos, limbs, protests and late drama

There were boos, limbs, protests, and late drama as Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday played out a 2-2 draw on Tuesday night.

There was mixed emotions after Birmingham grabbed a last-gasp draw with Demarai Gray’s 99th-minute equaliser sparing Blues their first home league defeat since April 2024, after Wednesday’s Jamal Lowe and George Brown overturned Jay Stansfield’s early goal.

Davies faced backlash from fans over his pre-planned substitutions of Tommy Doyle and Patrick Roberts, made to manage their limited minutes and avoid injuries amid a growing injury list.

Despite frustration at letting the game slip, Davies was relieved and happy with the dramatic point, while defending his tactical decisions to maintain squad energy and fitness.

Davies said, per the club website: “It was a game we started really brightly in, I thought we were very good and created some moments and chances, scored a goal, and I really liked us in that opening period.

“We had good control of the game, and I felt let’s get this second goal before half time because I thought they were there for the taking.

“But out of absolutely nothing they score a goal, which knocks us, knocks the team, knocks the stadium, knocks everyone.

“We stabilised at half time and regrouped, we came out well again and on the front foot, having moments and chances. We couldn’t take them and then they go in front from a set piece, out of nothing, and a goal.

“What it leads to is a very difficult situation, at home, 2-1 down in a game that we really feel we should be winning. That’s a test of character, that’s a test of mental strength, and the players did it.

“It could be one of the biggest points of our season, and one of the biggest moments of our season.

“From our point of view there’s very mixed feelings in the dressing room. There’s a sense of relief, or happiness that we got the goal, but there’s an underlying frustration because we know that we let that game turn into a game that was possibly going to get away from us.”

On the boos, he said per Birmingham Live: “They were pre-planned. I have no problem with the fans having angst around decisions I make.

“I love the fans here, they are amazing fans and right to voice their opinion – no problem.

“For me it was purely pre-planned, both Patrick and Tommy have hardly played any minutes this season.

“We’ve got a growing injury list, I had it noted down to take them off at 60 minutes, if they go on any longer and pick up (injuries) we are going to be down to the bare bones in terms of our squad.

“It was pre-planned to bring energy on with Lewis and Paik at that point, but they both got some minutes under their belt and showed moments, which is good. It gives them a bit more fitness as well. That was why I made those decisions.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s Henrik Pedersen, per Sky Sports:

“My emotions are a little bit mixed. The negative is that we have lost two points at the end. But in the big picture, there is a very proud emotion inside me because of the performance my players have delivered today in a difficult situation.

“We conceded a goal and they stayed together. You can always find a reason not to do something but we stayed together. It wasn’t about tactics, tonight was about the basic level of humanity.

“The referee found a lot of minutes at the end. You can be disappointed you didn’t get three points but we have to be proud of the performance in the circumstances.

“Everyone knew the situation. We haven’t spoken about it today. We have used all of our energy on the performance. If we had wasted energy on this we would have lost energy from the performance.”

Here’s how fans reacted to boos, limbs, protests and late drama as Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday play out a 2-2 draw…

@clurrrrxhx: All those millions spent and you still can’t beat the unpaid owls x

@TomHeath27: There’s questions for Davies, yes, but there’s no need to pull the trigger. Yet. Huge questions over those at the wheel of recruitment over the summer. I also think CD would benefit from a fresh and strong voice amongst his coaching staff. Give the man the tools for this level

@nicka____: I don’t even think that’s papered over the cracks. Questionable subs and I don’t want to see Cashin anywhere near that starting 11, or squad for that matter.

@stevecorner43: That was an excellent away performance by a squad of players who have brought together by circumstance. Considering they haven’t been paid, that was incredible. Every last one should be proud. Get fucked Chansiri

@nattasswfc: The late goal is a sickener but a point away at Birmingham after not being paid your wage (AGAIN) is unbelievable fight and spirit. Proud of the team. Absolutely monumentally disgusted once again at Dejphon Chansiri.

@callummarlow_: The triple sub killed it for me, Doyle was running the show. We should never been in the position to be chasing an equaliser against Sheffield Wednesday.

@BluesJack_: Unbelievable finish but another last minute goal papering over the cracks. Not good enough again.

@Terraces12thman: Fully Davies in. He led us back to the championship and I have faith in him to fire us up the table. It’s mad our fans think we’re owed something and should be top of the league.

@adebola_bloke: Embarrassing seeing Chris Davies celebrate like we’d won the league after getting a dodgy draw against a semi-professional side that hasn’t even been paid.

@ctb76: A couple of poor performances and we’re turning into them lot and buying bedsheets ready for the next game. Reality kicking in – the championship is a massive step up from where we were. Booing Davies after a record setting season just isn’t blues! Do better! #BCFC

@danks_shaun: I’ve never been Davies out, I’m still not, but last nights the first time I sensed a beginning of the end. Booing the subs and Wagners face. Hope he turns it around but it’s not looking good. #bcfc #blues

@YouBearsssssss: Imagine wanting Chris Davies OUT 🤣 He led us to a WORLD record points Total last year, (Yes League One But his 1st managerial job) we’re 12th after 8 games and above Ipswich and Southampton the 2 Favourites.. 👀 Not a crisis. 🤦‍♂️Get behind him stop booing! #BCFC

@_James_Jones_: Well. The fan base is well and truly polarised. I don’t think I’ve ever heard fans at St Andrews booing subs for the fact the my were being brought off. #bcfc

@stellytalks: Mixed across the fanbase to be fair. I love Davies, but some of the decisions are a concern and we are allowed to express our feelings. I don’t agree with booing the changes made, but most of us don’t agree with half the changes made tonight. 1 point gained in the end. KRO!

@J1875_: Everyone’s entitled to their opinion. Tonight was frustrating to say the least. I wasn’t a fan of the subs, but I also wasn’t a fan of booing. Again I get the frustration but it felt a bit toxic for me. And no I’m not a happy clapper, I get called too negative on here 🤣 #BCFC
