Billy Sharp ‘punches’ Tom Lockyer but referee gives nothing as Luton beat Sheffield United

Fans were left stunned when Billy Sharp ‘punches’ Tom Lockyer but the referee gives nothing as Luton Town beat Sheffield United.

The game saw Carlton Morris net his 15th goal of this season, as the Hatters boosted their promotion push with a 1-0 victory over the Blades.

After some outstanding work by Elijah Adebayo, Morris was able to score from close range and earn his side a third win in four games.

Luton are now just seven points behind Saturday’s opponents for the second automatic Championship promotion spot. The Blades lack conviction and seldom threaten until the final seconds.

The performance of Heckingbottom’s squad was typical of their inconsistent run, which sees three defeats in five league matches. After Boro’s win over Swansea, their lead over Boro has been reduced to four points.

In the final stages of the match, Sheffield United stepped up the pace with Oli McBurnie going close on three occasions. Luton keeper Ethan Horvath made a tremendous save from John Egan.

But the hosts finished an uninspiring game with just five attempts on target and looked highly unlikely of coming close to claiming a seventh win in eight home league games.

Sheffield United’s Paul Heckingbottom:

“Really proud of the boys again. Thought the first-half performance was really good. Think the goal caused changes to their (Sheffield United’s) shape. We quietened the crowd. We pressed them. I thought we did that really well in the first half. I think the timing of the goal was really key.

“We’re just working hard every day. We want to be in that mix at the end of the season. It’s a massive game on Wednesday. We’ve got a group here that are so committed who would run through a brick wall for each other. That’s what you need when you come to a tough place like Sheffield United.”

Luton’s Rob Edwards:

“Really proud of the boys again. Thought the first-half performance was really good. Think the goal caused changes to their (Sheffield United’s) shape. We quietened the crowd. We pressed them. I thought we did that really well in the first half. I think the timing of the goal was really key.

@wfc_westy: What is Sharp even trying to do there, and how haven’t the officials seen it 😂, the standard of officiating in the EFL is absolutely awful. That’s a straight red.

@bradpreston98: The referee was looking right at it, fucking shit

@WidowDaddy: clear punch, ban incoming, Sheff United imploding

@The5herriff: Billy Sharp has always been a cheating scumbag. Loves to dish it out but can’t take it when it’s done to him. He’s a typical blade….. a thug with no class.

@lawsy78: They get away with red card challenges every week….should of had two sent off at Blackburn…only way they know how to play is to try and bully the opposition….surely sharp gets done for that!

@superbobgod: Good job he doesn’t play for @WBA @EFL as he would get a 3 game retro ban like at least one of our players gets every season. Where is the consistency? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@mayor_n: Clear red card..

@clydon11: Standard officiating in the championship

@FrankieHolliday: That’s actually assualt 🤣
