Betfred Cup Second Round Draw

Sunday evening saw the Second Round Draw of this season’s Betfred Cup following Hibernian’s 4-1 win over Dundee at Easter Road.

It’s Scotland’s third trophy but the tournament is still very much wanted and by winning it can set the tone for the rest of the season.

This second round is where Scotland‘s European qualifying clubs Celtic, Rangers, Motherwell and Aberdeen enter having avoided the group stage due to continental commitments.

There was plenty of excitement for those such as Ayr United, Falkirk, Alloa and Arbroath as if they get can get paired with a giant, they will no doubt get a much needed money TV tie.

It’s a competition with managers of the big boys such as Celtic’s Neil Lennon, Rangers’ Steven Gerrard and Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes, so it’s a huge incentive to get their first available major silverware in the final which is set to take place on February the 28th.

Last season’s final was a memorable one, where Celtic overcame the odds to lift the trophy despite being reduced to ten men and being outplayed for much of the game.

The eventual winner will have to overcome three more rounds before they get even dream of lifting the trophy, it’s not just the big boys though, we have many underdogs who could go all the way. Football is an unpredictable game after all.

Nine of the 12 Premiership sides are included in today’s draw.

Dundee United, Hamilton and Kilmarnock those who have failed to make the next stage – although Killie’s group was badly damaged by a coronavirus outbreak.

The other pair have no one to blame but themselves after losing to League One and Two opposition, causing disruption to the Tangerines and Accies’ campaigns.

Delighted Jack Ross admits his side’s win tonight is a big boost in the Betfred Cup as it means the Edinburgh side will be seeded in the next round.

Defeat to Hearts and Aberdeen recently has meant it’s been a tough time recently, but now with that win, Hibs fans and the manager can go to bed happy and focus going forward and go on to produce a winning run.

I’m pleased we responded to the disappointment of the last couple of weeks.

“Being seeded helps.

“We wanted to win the group and have that 100 per cent record and we did that.

“We were aware that winning the group was important to us and would help us in the draw.”
