It has been revealed that a group consisting of Dennis Bergkamp, Henrik Larsson, Dirk Kuyt, and Ronald Koeman as an advisor are part of consortium trying to buy Wycombe Wanderers.
The League One side are said to be contending with major financial problems like many in the English pyramid with their current status unsustainable.
The group are said to have “made a bid for the club with a view to “catapulting Wycombe into stardom”.” with the club currently 2nd in the League One table after an impressive start to the new season.
They are not the club’s preferred option despite their plans to transform the club’s commercial operations and the wealth of footballing experience they would bring with them.
If the former players take control, they will be expected to wipe out the debts Wycombe are dealing with, cover their operating costs, bring in commercial revenue and overhaul the club’s academy.
Instead, 70-year-old lawyer and American businessman called Rob Couhig who has twice ran (and lost) to become New Orleans Mayor is the frontrunner.
They apparently made a bid for the club but the Chairboys’ board informed the group in June that the club were walking away.
Wycombe are now pressing ahead with American businessman Rob Couhig’s proposed takeover, which will be voted on by fans later this month and requires 75 per cent approval.
Stroud told The Athletic: “All of the discussions we had before we went down the route with Rob are covered by NDAs (non-disclosure agreements).
“I’ve been asked a few times, people have picked up rumours, but all I can say is, yes, we talked to a number of parties. That’s the position I have to hold.
“We think we’ve got the right person and we’re looking forward to the vote starting next Tuesday.”
Should the fans vote against Couhig’s takeover bid, Larsson’s consortium are reportedly waiting in the wings and ready to take their interest forward.
After finding out of the story that Dennis Bergkamp, Henrik Larsson, Dirk Kuyt, and Ronald Koeman are wanting to buy Wycombe Wanderers, fans took to give their reaction with the majority not wanting them – see those tweets on the next page.
