Benjamin Mendy faces new attempted rape charge; Mason Greenwood is released on bail

Benjamin Mendy faces a new attempted rape charge whilst Mason Greenwood is released on bail with football under a dark cloud.

27 year old Mendy has been charged with attempted rape on top of the string of rape counts he is already facing as he turned up to court on Wednesday afternoon.

The Manchester City footballer was accused of seven counts of rape and one of sexual assault against five women aged over 16.

He appeared at Chester Crown Court to face a new allegation of attempted rape, with a fresh offence relating to a sixth alleged victim, the court was told.

Mendy, who now faces nine charges in total against six complaints, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address, will next appear on the 11th of March for a hearing.

A provisional trial date in June was pushed back until July the 25th. Mendy was last month bailed after spending 134 days in custody following his arrest in August.

Judge Patrick Thompson released him from prison during a private hearing but imposed a list of “stringent” conditions.

He must hand over his passport and make no contact with complainants, while Mendy must also stay at his six bedroom, £4.8m mansion in Cheshire.

The fresh offence, seventh rape count, relates to a new complainant and is alleged to have taken place in July 2021.

Mendy was already facing six rape counts against four women when the new charge was added, one of these was carried out on the 23rd of August – just three days before he was charged, it is said.

It is also the second rape Mendy allegedly committed while on police bail after his arrest in November, and adding to that, he is accused of raping a woman three times at Cheshire mansion in October 2020.

The footballer allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in early January 2021.

He last played for the club on August 15 during their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham at the start of the season.

In September 2020, Man City boss Pep Guardiola revealed Mendy would be out of the game for at least a month due to an injury.

In a statement, the club said: “Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.

“The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United player Mason Greenwood has been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of raping a woman.

The 20-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of assault on Sunday following allegations on social media.

He was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill on Tuesday, with his previously stating that the he would not return to training or matches until further notice.

Greater Manchester Police said Mason was arrested after the force “became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence”.

Magistrates had granted a second extension to keep him in custody until Wednesday but he had now been bailed pending further investigations.

Following Greenwood’s arrest, video game developer EA Sports said Greenwood had been removed from FIFA products, getting taken out of active squads in FIFA 22 and suspended from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team packs and Ultimate Draft until further notice.

Sportswear firm Nike previously said it had suspended its relationship with the footballer.

“We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation,” a spokesman said.

On Sunday, Man Utd said it “did not condone violence of any kind” and had been made aware of the allegations but would make no further comment until the “facts have been established”.

In a further statement on Tuesday, the club said it “reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind”.
