Belly-laughing fans can’t stop watching what has since been described to be the ‘worst corner routine ever’ from Crawley Town on Boxing Day.

The rather unusual moment came with 56 minutes on the clock, the score at 0-0, a corner was expected to be sent in to box, with Sutton United players defending.

However, the ball ended up missing the box altogether and somehow flown all the way to the halfway line, with Crawley keeper Ellery Balcombe receiving it smashed it straight off the pitch.

While the corner delivery left people baffled, a shout which is said to have been from Sutton goalie Jack Rose had fans in stitches, as he could be heard saying “AWAY” – telling his defenders to push up yet the ball never reached the box.

It got worse for the Red Devils as Sutton went on to seal just their second away League Two win of the season with goals from Joe Kizzi and Rob Milsom scored in the second half.

Sutton’s first victory away from home since mid-October left new Crawley boss Matty Etherington with two defeats from his opening three games.

The U’s opened the scoring on the 61st minute when Kizzi netted his first goal of the season from close range after keeper Balcombe parried Omar Bugiel’s effort.

Th lead was extended nine minutes later when Milsom made it 2-0 from his spot kick after Tony Craig had brought down Bugiel.

Substitute Aramide Oteh got a consolation for Crawley from Dom Telford’s assist in the last minute of stoppage time for Crawley.

Sutton boss Matt Gray said post-match: “I wanted us to step it up in the second half and we did.

“We thoroughly deserved to take the lead and get the three points and the only disappointment was to concede right at the death to deny us of a clean sheet.

“It was important for us to start this busy run of fixtures with a win.

“We have got to take advantage of two home games now before we look to do something in the January window.”

Crawley boss Matty Etherington meanwhile added: “The two goals we conceded were avoidable.

“A lot has gone on at this club in the last five or six months and they look fearful. We need to free them up.

“They look nervous and are playing backwards and not forwards.

“They [injuries] have hurt us as well but now we have to roll our sleeves up – we are in a relegation battle.

“I will certainly be looking to strengthen in key areas in January. Every supporter will know.”

“They are very well drilled,” he said on Sutton. “We knew what to expect. On the key occasions, we didn’t deal with it.”
