Barnsley v Bolton: Clumsy defending, referee gripe and a goal straight from a corner

Barnsley v Bolton saw some clumsy defending, referee gripe and a goal straight from a corner with Ian Evatt’s side winning 3-1 at Oakwell.

Bolton took control of their League One playoff semi-final following a cautious first half of their first leg on Friday night.

Dion Charles skillfully directed a brilliant cross from Paris Maghoma into the net, giving Bolton the lead. Then after the break, Charles extended his goal tally for the season to 20 in all competitions by successfully converting a penalty, beating Liam Roberts after the goalkeeper collided with Josh Sheehan.

Although Barnsley managed to pull one back through a collaboration between substitutes Conor Grant and Sam Cosgrove, who struck the ball with force, it was Randell Williams who made impact as in stoppage time, Williams scored directly from a corner, making ti 3-1 Bolton.

The second leg of the match will take place at the Toughsheet Community Stadium on Tuesday, and it will be shown live on Sky Sports Football.

Barnsley interim boss Martin Devaney said: “I thought we started well. The goal was disappointing, obviously we had Coley (Devante Cole) off the pitch so we have to manage that a little bit better.

“Second half, I thought we had some spells where we were looking to get that goal and then it is a mistake, which can happen.

“At 2-0, we made changes and they affected the game. We get the goal, the momentum changes and we had two good chances with Phillo (Adam Phillips) – the keeper pulled off a great save.

“The third goal really hurt us. I thought it was a foul on Sam (Cosgrove) on the edge of the box and from that, they get the corner.

“All season, set-pieces have sort of let us down, especially defensive set-pieces. It is maybe a foul on the keeper, but it is what it is.

“We have to be positive and pick ourselves up. Stranger things have happened and we go again Tuesday, We will attack the game and if we score that first goal, anything can happen.

“Bolton are a good side, they have some really good individuals who can hurt you. I thought we contained them and kept them to few good chances.

“We had some long periods in the game where we were on top and trying to create. It wasn’t free-flowing, shot after shot – but we were still probing.

“We will dust ourselves off, reflect, look at the game and pick a team to go and try to win on Tuesday.”

Bolton’s Ian Evatt said: “There’s nothing achieved just yet.

“This is a collective responsibility. The players, myself, the staff are responsible for Tuesday night. But we need the fans as well.

“They were incredible tonight and we need our stadium packed out. We need it to be raucous, intense and intimidating for the opponents and to really back the players to get the job done.

“And from what I’ve seen they’re going to be there in their numbers. We’re going to need them. We needed them tonight. They really stood up for us and hopefully they can go home happy.

“It’s a step forward and that’s all it is. We’ve seen from that 10/15-minute spell that Barnsley are a momentum team and if you give them momentum they can hurt you and cause you problems, so we have to manage that better and stay concentrated and focused for 90-plus minutes.

“But we deserve that tonight and we now have to get ready for the next game. It’s a collective responsibility. We’re all invested in this project and this football club and we all want to see us do well.

“We need everybody. We need the players, we need the coaching staff, we need the fans and the non-football staff to really come together and push us towards that next step.

“For 75 minutes it was a fantastic away performance. I thought we more than deserved our two-goal lead. We had a goal in my view harshly ruled out from a set-play but we looked a threat from set-plays all night.

“Then from the first real lapse in concentration of the evening, when Barnsley are asking so many questions, they score and kind of changed the momentum of everything for 10 minutes.

“We had to weather the storm and Nathan made some big saves but then to re-group and have a big chance from Kyle, and then score from the set-play with the importance of set-plays highlighted again, I thought we got what we deserved.

“The fans were incredible and the players, not just the 11 but everyone involved, showed the togetherness, along with the support, which was fantastic. I’m delighted with how they focused tonight and now we have to do it all again on Tuesday.”

This is how fans reacted as Barnsley v Bolton saw clumsy defending, referee gripe and a goal straight from a corner…

@Ben_Oldroyd: Defence abysmal. Midfield same. Weak as piss all over. Bit what made me laugh most was playing long ball for 90mins to Santos who’s biggest CB in league 😂 #barnsleyfc

@Reds30082: No foul. Just rank bad defending and horrendous goalkeeping. Utterly embarrassing and that is how they are coached. An under 18s team could set up and defend a corner better than that.

@SimonSteer11: Jerome knew exactly what he was doing blocking off Roberts. For me it’s obstruction cos he’s impeded Roberts but cos he ruled out 1 goal from a corner already the ref he won’t be doing it again. 😩

@nealwilson8: It’s a definite foul on the keeper the big lad backs Roberts into the net

@tyler_bfc: How isn’t that a foul on keeper and why is nobody appealing for it. If not then roberts you are even shitter than I thought

@JamieKettlewell: Yeah, nice technique by Randall Williams but clear foul on the keeper.

@Ursodave: Just ignore the keeper being completely blocked out 🤣 Hell of a shot/cross, to be fair.

@rutt74: That’s obstruction on the keeper all day long! What a joke

@RussBoland: Went with high hopes but this played out as expected. Thought we had chance until the Williams/Roberts balls-up and HTF do you score from a corner like that? Absolute mountain to climb. Game over. #barnsleyfc

@EC1874_: Cameron Jerome putting keeper thru the net 😍 be on repeat this one

@joel8erry: Now, I know this is a beaut of a corner from Williams, but to me this embodies why Jerome is perfect as a sub. Watch his movement closely to pin the keeper enough to stop him, but not too much to foul him. Top class big bloke play.

@chrislowe1989: Opinions on Collins aside, a board who’s decisions are dominated by statistics & spreadsheets, have allowed a playoff campaign to be lead by a coach with a 0% win record over a coach who won 46% of his games. Of all the gaffs & there’s a lot, this is by far the worst #BarnsleyFC

@w4key7: Three stupid goals that get worse when you see the replays. Big Sam made a difference when he came on and has to start for me on Tuesday. Can’t wait for 90 minutes of time wasting and 6 foot wannabe hard men throwing themselves to the floor every chance they get!! #barnsleyfc
