Barnsley manager set to depart with replacement already being lined up

Concerning news for Barnsley it would seem this morning with reports stating that their manager is set to depart with a replacement already being lined up.

The news that Gerhard Struber is leaving in favour of a move to the MLS is a blow to the Tykes after he led the Championship club to survival on the final day of last season.

Reliable journalist Alan Nixon suggesting his time could be up at Oakwell, with the South Yorkshire outfit already supposedly lining up a replacement.

There has been ‘intense speculation’ that Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls are keen to bring the Austrian boss to the United States to take their Head Coach job.

The 43-year-old has maintained a coy stance on links of him moving on and a decision could be made by Struber today with regards to what he does.

He also has a buy-out clause in his Reds deal allowing him to speak to rival clubs if they agree a set figure.

This news will only further frustrate their fans, will the club struggling once again this season and more signings including one or two forwards needed to avoid another relegation battle.

The 43-year-old knows this, and judging by his last two press conferences, he clearly has things on his mind, with some reports in his native Austria suggesting the deal is signed and sealed.

In seven of their last 11 league games at Oakwell, Barnsley have failed to score – even accounting for a commendable six clean sheets in that spell.

They have scored just twice in the first half of Championship games at home since Christmas.

Speaking about his future after Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Coventry City, he said: “At the moment I am here as coach and we will see what the future brings. Right now, my focus and concentration is on my boys.

“I am here. I am the head coach here and I have the responsibility. Many people around me and in the media write about interest from other clubs. At the moment, this is not a new one. I have the focus here and this is my job.”

Struber on the recent performance/form, he said: “We can’t score and this is our challenge.

“Some new players can help us and this is the situation at the moment.

“You can see in the last few games that we need reinforcements, especially a new striker.

“We need a big conviction when we have the chance to score goals and this is our big topic. At the moment, we do not find the right balance or smart positions where we can score goals.

“We are in an exchange with some new players who can help us. This is the situation at the moment. You can see we need new players, especially in the offence.

“We had good chances to score goals. It was a difficult game. I expected the opponent in this shape and also with spirit. But it is our first point of the season and 100 per cent not our last.”

On the prospect of Struber leaving, Mads Andersen said: “To be honest, I do not know so much about it, so I’d rather not comment. He has been very good for my career.

“He comes with a lot of energy for us in the game and it is very important for us.”

It was on the 20th of November 2019 that Struber was appointed as manager of Barnsley, penning a two-year deal, succeeding Daniel Stendel. Barnsley was last in the league, seven points away from safety.

They stayed in the relegation zone most of the 2019/20 campaign. With two stoppage time wins against Nottingham Forest and Brentford at the end of the season, Struber guided Barnsley to securing Championship football for a second successive season.

It was helped by Wigan Athletic falling into administration and getting 12 points deduction. Wigan appealed the 12 points deduction and lost, meaning Struber and Barnsley stay in the EFL Championship for the 20/21 season.
