He is not a football fan, but his friend supports York City “and suggested I go down and take some photos before they inevitably get washed away or removed”.

Since the club has been closed owing to the pandemic, the gates have often been locked, but “when I walked past on Saturday the gates were wide open with a few cars in the stadium,” Christopher told YorkMix.

“I don’t know who has painted them, although it makes me think we have a York version of Banksy… maybe even the man himself?

“I think the artworks are brilliant and wonder if it would be good for the stadium to host an art or photography exhibition off the back of this. It would be great for the local scene in York.”

There is artwork on Jon Parkin swigging a beer in the 2017 FA Trophy Final, a nurse is revealed as the York City mascot Yorkie, David Longhurst – who died on the pitch in 1990 – on the footbridge and manager Gary Mills on the player entrance.
