Awkward moment sees Marcus Tavernier slip up his penalty

There was extraordinary and awkward scenes during one game on Saturday as one moment sees Marcus Tavernier slip up his penalty kick.

The unique moment came in the 50th minute with the scoreline goalless between Middlesbrough and Norwich in the Championship.

Boro were handed a chance to go one up through a spot kick when Gibson challenged Tavernier in the box.

However, Tavernier stepped up then slipped in the run up in taking the penalty. He put the ball into the back of the net and started celebrating with his teammates.

But the referee correctly spotted that he kicked the ball against his standing foot. So, free-kick to Norwich for taking two touches.

Boro players looked confused at what the decision was all about, and everyone in the Sky Sports News studio agreed it was the right call and that you could only feel sorry for the player.

Minutes later, another penalty was awarded, but this time to Middlesbrough’s opposition as Coulson brought down Max Aarons in the box.

Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki made sure this was going to count, simply placing into the back of the net and stayed on his feet.

Pukki stepped up to take the spot-kick and expertly dispatched into the bottom right with the keeper diving the wrong way.

To the media after the game, he said: “Let’s be quick lads. I don’t feel like speaking much today.’ – Currently 5 mins into a rant on why Norwich City’s Sorensen wasn’t sent off.

Boro boss Neil Warnock, wanting the interview to be done quick, said on the Tavernier penalty: “We’ve had a few players slip today. We will have to blame the groundsman.”

Warnock on Norwich defeat: “It was a game of two penalties, I don’t think Marcus (Bettinelli) has had a shot to save today against a very good side.”

Fair to say he is not one bit happy on losing his first league game since opening day.

Daniel Farke said herRanks this as a ‘massive’ win in terms of the end goal and the circs eg. international boys all over the place.

Cantwell felt a problem in his hip Fri afternoon final training session. They had to jump on a flight so will get a full update on return to Norwich. Too early to say for Stoke.

Fresh injury concerns as well from this game. Rupp reported felt the hamstring again at the end. Hugill HT sub was a result of suspected ligament damage in that shoulder problem he went down with. Both to be assessed next day or so,

Farke unsurprisingly doesn’t share Warnock’s view that Sorensen should have gone. ‘I didn’t think his first booking was a yellow. Not for me. But the opposition manager will always see these things differently. It is normal.’

On the penalty chalked off: ‘We live in bizarre times. That was another bizarre moment. I thought both pens were needless as the attacking player was going away from the goal.’
