Average away attendance of every League One club for the 2023/24 season – 27th May

In this article, we take a look at the average away attendance of every League One club for the 2023/24 season as it comes to an end.

It’s fact, the biggest away attendances for the third tier can be found in English football, you’ll find no better in the world.

Each club’s travelling support have racked up the miles following their side up and down the country, some taking advantage of the shorter away days, others opting to fill up their cars with petrol for the more lengthy journeys, including some gruelling midweek fixtures and the busy festive period. Not to mention Sky causing havoc for many in some ways over their picks and TV times.

Before we get started, here’s a brilliant poem about away days, written by Matt Abbott.

Paper boys rest weary legs
as you start your journey
It’s slim pickings when it comes to pubs
because in most you’re not allowed
the bookies lengthen your odds
the coppers mark your cards
and bum fluffs where thick stone island just to prove their hard
from car, coach or train
we lumber up for foreign ground
Terraced streets and retail parks are familiar in a Rubik’s cube
your lungs are working twice as hard
your bladder will as well
shoppers wins from a distance
as football casts its spell
Some feel the need to mark the territory by being assholes to bar staff
and such others start the drinking as soon as they’ve departed
left to convince a steward they haven’t had too much
Every goal is a 90th minute winner
Create a vacuum in a whole entire stadium
and even when your favourites
a point is worth a trophy
Heroes in a weird kit
gallant knights with grace and grit
the sickly smell of processed meat
and plastic cheese and frazzled onions
watered lager pissy sink sand crafty bags galore
change the postcodes for floodlights
and the tiny prematch song doesn’t matter
because behind our team is a place where where we belong
