Atmosphere at Carrow Road turns toxic as Norwich fans boo own players in defeat to Blackburn

The atmosphere at Carrow Road turns toxic as Norwich fans loudly boo own players in defeat to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday afternoon.

There was a lot riding on this fixture for the Canaries, with Norwich notting winning in their last five Championship games, closer to the bottom three than the top six with local rivals Ipswich flying high in second in their first season since promotion, so it’s fair to say that won’t be helping Wagner’s case any either.

Visitors Blackburn meanwhile started the day only a couple of places above but are in much better, with three wins in their past four.

How did the game play out? Well, rather badly for the hosts, and pretty much right from the off too.

It took just 8 minutes for Blackburn to open the scoring. From the right, Rankin-Costello threaded a pass through to Tyrhys Dolan, who skipped into the box and fires past keeper George Long.

Then after quarter of an hour played, Blackburn doubled the scoreline. From the halfway line, Moran foumd Sammie Szmodics in space, who shifted it onto his right to stroke it into the bottom corner for his eighth of the season. And the boos that followed from the home crowd are quite something.

Blackburn made it 3-0on 49 minutes, with Szmodics starting and finishing an excellent counter, finding Dolan who clipped it over to Moran on the right, lifting a first-time side-foot volley towards the back post where Sammie tapped home.

Less than 10 minutes later, Blackburn were down to 10-men with Scott Wharton getting sent off for a last-man challenge on Hernandez.

Norwich finally had something to cheer for the hosts, as in the final moments of the game, they broke down their left flank via McLean, with Wahlstedt palming his low cross straight into the path of Gomes Sara, who hit home into an empty net for a Canaries consolation.

Chris Sutton on Sky Sports, with Blackburn making it 1-0: “Patient from Blackburn and then the punch – and it is all about the first touch and Warner is too late to get across, but it is a devastating finish.”

Sutton on Rovers doubling their lead: “It is a brilliant finish, but too easy to play against Norwich in the middle of the park – Blackburn have started the game so well.

“Blackburn have just strangled Norwich in these opening 25 minutes. And you can blame David Wagner, but looking at the Norwich City player’s body language, it looks as if they have just chucked it…

“It has not gone well for Norwich, but they just have to focus on getting the next goal, then it can all change – it cannot get any worse for them.”

“I rarely say this, but it looks like the Norwich players have chucked it watching some of their players out of possession.”

On it going 3-0 Blackburn: “Wagner’s wheels are coming off, but from a Blackburn perspective, what a goal, it is brilliantly worked from back to front.”

Chris Sutton on the red card: “He says he got the ball – it was a quick decision by the referee, but maybe there is a glimmer of hope for Norwich.

“Does he get the ball? I think he catches Hernandez as well as getting a toe to the ball.

“They maybe down to 10 men, but they are still pressing – there is a lot to admire about this Blackburn team.”

Ryan Jarvis (Former Norwich striker for BBC Radio Norfolk): “It’s brave, but he has to go for it.

“It’s certainly injected a bit of spark straightaway.”

Mark Atkins (Former Blackburn midfielder on BBC Radio Lancashire): “It’s sloppy defending in the first place, but he tried to slide in and get the ball.

“It’s a very close call, but he doesn’t seem to reach it.

“It gives Norwich a glimmer of hope with most of the second half to play.”

Ryan Jarvis on it going 2-0: “We give the ball away, but they go through the gears so quickly.

“Blackburn look so comfortable, they are creating overloads in midfield.

“Clearly someone needs to drop inside and make it harder for Blackburn’s midfield players to get on the ball. It looks far too easy.

“The gaps are huge in and around the midfield area.

“I don’t think its a case of not switching on, there are just more Blackburn bodies.

“As soon as Norwich lose the ball they are exposed.

“Everything I’ve been told through the season has been on show today.

“It’s far too easy for the opposition to get forward, to break lines, to get into the box.

“The frightening thing is when we’re in possession. When we turn the ball over, we are not set up secure to deal with the counter attacks.

“The players are walking off dejected. There is no spark.

“It looks like there is no self belief. It’s not nice to see.

“We are not playing against Man City here but we are making them look like it at times.”

Twitter users had their say as the atmosphere at Carrow Road turns toxic with Norwich fans taking to boo their own players in the 3-1 defeat to Blackburn…

@FPL_BDLion: Hard luck lads, was a close one.

@David_Soakell: Zero conviction from board, manager & players. I could unleash a string of bad language but refuse to lower my standards. But there is no excuses & @NorwichCityFC need new blood within the board. Two lazy appointments in Dean Smith & Wagner. Sack the lot.

@JordanScott07: Delia, Webber, Wagner out

@R_J_M_11: The arrogance from your fanbase over the last decade, pretending you were something you were not, telling us you would never be like Ipswich. We told you the gap was closing,we told you we were coming for you, you didnt listen. Norwich city football club you are rotting. ENJOY x

@AJWardy93: Time to win league one again I guess

@mark_woodroffe: Just read the room you clowns. Don’t send out messages when we play like shit. We are in free fall. Total rubbish. Get in the bin

@finlayncfc: Time to go webber delia and Wagner

@Bunski90: Has he gone yet? #ncfc

@realrhysfoulkes: Chopping veg for the Sunday Roast is remarkably more delightful than watching anything #ncfc can offer.

@NCFC_Dannyyy: Wagner knows he’s gone, he should just call out the board for the unacceptable summer. Had a load of sellable assets sold and replaced with a bunch of free signings and old players who are now (to no surprise) not performing. The idiots running this club need a wake up call #ncfc

@BenHuntley2000: Once again we’re a club that isn’t proactive! It’s like we purposely wait for this type of situation to manifest into something really toxic which is horrible to see! A 3 Year period of waiting for a takeover of some sort and the old guy waiting to hold the new guys hand #NCFC

@Dx1em0: Wagner saying he can’t fault the effort of his players is a disgrace. Did he watch the same game we did? #ncfc

@cthomson16: I can’t believe some of our fans clapped come full time. Our fan base are a joke too many happy clappers unfortunately #ncfc

@NCFCZeb: I’m probably on my own for this and u can’t shout at me if you want. I have nothing against fans who clap, the same as the ones who boo. But don’t get angry with how they react after the match. Cmon we are better than this we are all fans aren’t we. #ncfc

@followthetowen: Wagner needs more time. Approximately 6 weeks. From a neutral.

@ABlueHorizon_: Well that went fucking well didn’t it 👍
