Aston Villa take to troll Liverpool with perfectly-timed tweet

Aston Villa take to troll Liverpool with a perfectly-timed tweet with a reminder about the Carabao Cup which is a hot topic right now.

The West Midlands outfit’s official Twitter account posted a picture of the youthful Villa side that had to face Liverpool in the FA Cup third round last season.

This came after a Covid outbreak at the training ground affected their entire first-team squad.

16 debuts were handed out and Villa had starting line-up with seven under-23 players and four from the under-18s. while five others came off the bench to make debuts.

The timing was perfect given Liverpool are currently trying to get Thursday night's Carabao Cup semi-final, second leg tie with Arsenal postponed after a Covid outbreak of their own

That tie last January was level come half time after 17-year-old Louie Barry stunned by cancelling out Sadio Mane’s early goal. However Liverpool’s full-strength team comfortably won 4-1.

The social media post comes as the Reds attempt to get Thursday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final, first leg tie against Arsenal postponed due to a Covid outbreak that has closed their Kirkby training base.

Villa supporters have accused Liverpool of double standards given their team were given little choice but to use any available players to fulfil the match last year.

The FA made clear at the time that any club capable of mustering 14 players would be expected to fulfil the tie or forfeit their place amid a congested fixture schedule.

With Liverpool’s semi-final postponed, as confirmed by the EFL at 1pm on Wednesday, there is further doubt on their FA Cup clash against Shrewsbury.

Pep Lijnders, the club’s assistant manager, joins manager Jurgen Klopp in testing positive for the virus.

There are further cases amongst the Liverpool playing staff with Joel Matip, Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino, who tested positive ahead of Sunday’s trip to Chelsea.

Takumi Minamino, Divock Origi, Harvey Elliott and Thiago Alcantara are injured and Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Plenty of Liverpool fans made aware that they themselves were left with no choice but to play a weakened team at Villa Park when the sides met in the 2019-20 Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

The game was played the day before Liverpool’s FIFA Club World Cup semi-final and most first-choice players had already flown to Qatar. Liverpool were thrashed 5-0 by Villa.

Villa, who is managed by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, travel to Manchester United on Monday night for their FA Cup third round tie.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are set to host League One side Shrewsbury Town on Sunday but the Covid outbreak must surely also place that game in doubt.

Twitter users reacted as Aston Villa take to troll Liverpool with a perfectly-timed tweet…

@9squeeze: Gerrard won’t approve of this

@avfck1eran: Forced to play unlike some

@afcvir: gotta love the shithousery

@MLetford10: The air is thick with hypocrisy #CarabaoCup

@afcesr: This is why we rate your club @AVFCOfficial

@Corballyred: Seriously, if you want to see how much Liverpool lives rent free in other clubs heads, do you know no more cancellations for Covid let’s see how happy other clubs will be because of that…

@Irish_Gooner: Okay, the banter bid for Emile Smith Rowe can be forgotten about now 🤝😆 Great to see Villa tweeting this, one rule for one and different for another

@SamueILFC: Indirecting Liverpool FC over a COVID outbreak has evolved from salty rival fans to official club accounts now. Biggest club in England btw.

@andcouldheplay7: This is absolutely batshit from a club’s official account. They’ll act all innocent, but they know exactly what they’re doing here. We’ve had to shut the training facilities FFS. Do they think #LFC should run a fan competition to get a starting line-up? Embarrassing from Villa.

@Ifcj__: Shameless shameless bastards. They got to play our under 18s side in the quarter final of the Carabao Cup a few years back because they wouldn’t let us cancel

@Zak_Wagman: Jurgen Klopp needs to be reminded that English football is not all about him.

@tom_avfc1: There’s a bit of shithousery in this tweet somewhere

@redhammer8: Think this is aimed at you @LFC mate

@WHUFCallum_: Liverpool fans getting proper angry, but the next fixture is the FA Cup so they are just tweeting about last years events. Timing is funny though hahahaha

@JFelms: Don’t ever let anyone tell you that the FA/EFL don’t favour certain teams
