Anthony Gordon surprises as he speaks Spanish and Catalan at his Barcelona unveiling

Anthony Gordon surprises as he speaks Spanish and Catalan at his Barcelona unveiling after making the move from Newcastle for £69.3m.

Fair to say he is living his dream, he had long planned for this, revealing he learned Spanish as a kid with the belief of joining the La Liga side one day, even dropping some Catalan when signing shirts.

The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract until 2031, with talks advancing earlier this week as Bayern Munich began showing interest.

He said: “The conversations I was having for for quite a while, I found out very late from Barca, but I think as soon as I knew Barca was a serious option, there was never any question. I always wanted Barca.

“Barca, like I said then, is the biggest club on on the planet. It’s the stuff I dreamed of as as a child. It really is a dream come true to to be.

“Like I said, as a kid, to play for Barcelona is the biggest dream possible. It’s the biggest club on the planet.

“I know it comes with a lot of responsibility, but like I said, I’m ready for this kind of challenge, ready for that responsibility.

“I know everybody that players in the past who’ve wore a shirt, it holds a lot of weight, but I’m ready. I’m excited for the challenge to play for Barca when I was 3 years of age, to play with Lamine and the rest of the players is very exciting for me.

“I think the more players with quality you have around you, the better you’re going to be.

“These players are at the very top level for a reason. They’re the best players in the world.

“They have so much quality and I seen this when we played them at St. James’s Park. We could not touch the ball. I think to do this at St. James’s Park is really difficult because we play with a lot of pressure, a lot of intensity.

“The fans are also amazing and it can create an intense atmosphere. But yeah, Frenkie and Pedri, they ruined our plan.”

He gave some of his answers in Spanish…

Interviewer: “It’s been a long time since so much has been invested in a footballer. How does the responsibility of having paid almost 80 million euros for you?

Gordon (translated from Spanish): “I’m ready for this challenge. I’m very aware of the history of this club and the incredible players who have worn this shirt. I’m very excited, I’m very proud to be here. It’s a dream.”

On how did he though go about and why did he go about learning the language…

“I wanted to speak Spanish because as a kid I believed I would play for for Barca, believe it or not.

“I have a physio in in Newcastle and we spoke every day and I told him one day I’ll play for Barca so I want to learn Spanish. So that’s why.

“Yeah I only won one trophy with Newcastle so I’m extremely excited.

“I have a burn and fire in my belly to win to win here to win at the biggest club in the world is the best possible outcome.

“If I had to pick one trophy, it would be the Champions League.”

Anthony Gordon surprises as he speaks Spanish and Catalan at his Barcelona unveiling, here’s what fans on social media had to say…

@FCBName: Gordon speaks Catalan aswell???????

@ReissNFFC: After 1 pint of Estrella Galicia on a beer garden 🍺

@alffiesmiith: This has spun my head. Never did I think Gordon could speak Spanish that well. Woulda thought he’d been learning German with the amount he’s been linked to Bayern #nufc

@CouchNish: Is Spanish a 2nd language in Liverpool?

@Loulameg: Anthony Gordon speaking fluent Spanish was definitely not on my football summer transfer window bingo card Fair play 👏👏

@Josheyy_x: Anthony Gordon dropping an interview in fluent Spanish and says “I always knew I was going to play for Barcelona” that’s mental. Fair play to him.

@bobafett26: The Anthony Gordon story is astonishing. Out of the blue on the face of it but something he has clearly been driven to achieve since he was a child – learning Spanish to achieve the transition. Fair play to him.

@KevTwine86: Fair play on Anthony Gordon, clearly been hard at work learning Spanish for some time! To be so fluent so soon, dedication that, more so than he showed Everton after one season or Newcastle recently 😂 #AnthonyGordon #Newcastle #Gordon #Barca #talksport

@B03GHB4L1: I think this a very impressive mental marker for a footballer. A sign of someone who takes themselves and their situation seriously. We’ve had players at Chelsea play two/three years who cannot give an interview like this in English. We’ve had multiple players like this wearing our armband.
