He said: It’s frustrating because you know I want to play I think every player here does and it’s difficult cuz we got so many good players um but watching from the sideline at any game at any level is hard you just you just want to come on the pitch because you feel you can make an impact.
“I felt like I did when I come on I tried to just get our people be direct and cause problems in the few minutes I got um and I’ll always try and do that
Interviewer: “It was a really frustrating night was it”
Gordon: “Yeah I think our aim was to make a statement and sort of correct the performances we’ve had in the past two games I still think we’re in that place I think we’ve still got to do better you know luckily for us and and down to hard our hard work that we’ve topped the group of through which is the most important thing but we still need to improve.”
Interviewer: “And you look at the draw now France, Germany, Portugal, Spain all on the other side of the draw that helps a bit doesn’t it reasons for optimism there surely ”
Gordon: “Yeah that helps in of football you want to control your own journey I think um but we’re going to have to play them at some point and you know it doesn’t matter sort of when we Face them it’s not how football from now on and as long as we win that’s all that matters”
Interviewer: “Does it feel like England are way off where you guys expect to be right now”
Gordon: “I just think we can do so much better that that’s the problem we’ve got such good players and you know training so good every day we we do everything right and then it’s just not clicking so you know hopefully in the coming games it will because you know we need to start really attacking teams and dominating games”
Interviewer: “I thought even fans were magnificent tonight second half they did not stop cheering and yet there were quite a lot of boos at the end I guess you can understand that”
Gordon: “Yeah to be honest on the bench I said a couple of ads the fans have been so impressive that they didn’t really stop um and yeah I think again we’re not creating that many chances so listen I’m not going to say don’t be frustrated because you want to watch good football everyone does but just stick with us cuz winning is the important thing”
Interviewer: “And what is it like in the dressing room right now is it depressed is it determined to try and turn things around how would you describe it”
Gordon: “I think the best word is focused like we we know where we are we know we’ve been we’ve been short of where we should be and the focus is is really good actually on what we need to do no one’s sort of putting it up or we’re saying it straight and you know that that’s how it should be”
Interviewer: “You said you struggle to click, is it nerves”
Gordon: “No I don’t think it’s nerves I mean we’ve all played on on big stages um for a while so I don’t think nerves is the best thing to put it down to, I just think it’s football’s like that sometimes and yeah I don’t I don’t really know the answer for you to be honest I don’t really want to give you something that’s not true”
Interviewer: “There was one flowing move right at the end when Cole had a shot saved, is that the sort of thing you’d like to see we’d like to see from England more?”
Gordon: “I think that’s that’s just the last part we’re missing I think we’re controlling games really well we keep the ball well but that direct just causing problems and and going for teams is probably what we’re missing and you see towards the end of it we created a really good chance just from just going for it and not worrying about losing the ball”
As mentioned, Anthony Gordon was praised by fans for a refreshing interview after England’s draw with Slovenia…
@Nusc2023: He always speaks so well. The way he approaches the games is worlds away from other players. Love having him at our club.
@EasyasEze: Would really love for him to get some serious game time next match. Looked so positive when he came on and played a killer ball which we nearly scored off
@MonsieurSharp: NUFC fan here. Itās fair to say he not the footballer (or the person) we thought we were buying and I mean that in a positive way. Like so many of his colleagues heās wasted on Southgateās England.
@Spongerob33: Thought it was a weird decision to send him out for media duty tho. Making the lad justify a performance that he wasn’t part of for 88 mins!
@okeh_suedehead: No waffle, honesty and transparency. He needs to start, but will he. Over to Safegate for that one.??
@hayleyweeen: NUFC fan here and Iām more than happy to hold my hands up and say I was so wrong about him. I wasnāt keen on him signing at all but Iām actually really proud to have him playing in the black and white. Heās passionate, driven and speaks very maturely. Heās become vital for us.
@fernarlo_: Listened to a football daily podcast with him on not long ago, speaks a lot about self help books, development, general bits and pieces that he does for himself and genuinely seems very switched on. Not your typical footballer at all
@GingerPirlo_: Based on this I’d make Anthony Gordon the manager. Immediately.
@WanderingDutchX: Gordon did more in 2 minutes than the front 4 did in the entire game.
@fewpints: The disrespect this lad has been shown is horrific, same old rinse and repeat of reputations starting!
@AJK_86: Fair play to Gordon, said what all us fans are thinking. Let’s hope for that big improvement at weekend, without it England will be home early.
@Thegeordiefaith: So proud that he plays for us. Came on, made an impact then fronts up and talks sense. Fair play.
@NU_Crafty_FC: Itās mad that Gordon was on the pitch for 5 minutes and created more chances (1) than Bellingham, Gallagher and Saka combined (0) š
@TTVDoodle: We need Gordon, Palmer and Foden combo. We will see chances then. Adam Hennessey
@9_Hendo: Why are we making a kid front up for the interview who’s had like 5 minutes on the pitch?
@AFriskyPigeon: This is what Southgate’s done. He has someone who’s only played 5 minutes and is not to blame one iota needing to come out and ask for support. You’re not the problem Gordon, you’re the solution, and every single England fan knows it.
@TonyYoull: Compare this to what Kane & Rice have been saying this past week and it shows why everyone is pissed off. The players on the bench can see it, but the older, long standing players of the squad are far too far up their own arse to admit it or even see it in the first place.
@G_Star1337: Needs to start
@MontyMagic69: More minutes in front of the camera than on the pitch well done Gareth George
@UpTheVilla566: Needs to start next game for me
@titan_toon: The sad thing here is that his interview was nearly as long as his game time. Transformed the game 268 minutes too late. You just know that Foden will start as LW next game.
