Ange Postecoglou praises Archie Gray as his debut performance leaves Tottenham fans stunned, playing as a centre-back in a 5-1 win at Hearts.
The young midfielder, just 18 years old, continues the make strides, so good that he’s caught the eye of fans and pundits alike, with many praising his composure and talent on the pitch, even more so after his performance earlier this week.
Archie’s journey before joining Tottenham has been nothing short of impressive, had a breakout season with Leeds, was named in the Championship Young Player of the Season, then impressed so much so that Premier League clubs came calling.
Now he’s making instant impact with Spurs, in a friendly against Hearts, where he showed off his skills, winning tackles, headers, and even played in an unfamiliar position at centre-back, showing that he’s not just a one-trick pony.
By showing that Gray, grandson of Frank Gray, and the great nephew of Eddie Gray, can play in multiple positions, it makes him even more a valuable asset to the team, and you just know with his talent and determination, he’ll continue to impress and make a name for himself at Tottenham, with many even tipping him to break into the England senior team earlier than expected.

“Archie did well. He probably wasn’t expecting to be starting in a back four. It’s for guys like Archie to get accustomed to how we play, how we train and he’s an intelligent kid and coped with that okay,” Ange said after the game.
“It’s about letting him and Lucas settle into things. But I thought Archie was really good today. He did the things we know he can do well, he’s adapting to the intensity and tempo of what we do. Lucas the same.
“They’re both really good kids. The right attitude, humble but really ambitious, want to make an impact. They are not here to just ease their way in, they want to play, They bring a good energy to the group.”
“Definitely [a good start], it was great to get a good feel of playing the ball and getting minutes in the legs,” Gray said in a post-match interview with the club’s social media channels.
“I wasn’t expecting to play centre-back but I’m just grateful to come in and get the opportunity to play.
“I don’t really care where I play, I’m 18 and need to learn the game. Anywhere he puts me, I’m happy to learn and have great team-mates around me to teach me.
“Just getting used to the simple things that my team-mates like on and off the pitch, trying to get to know them – today really helped.
“They’re all brilliant, they’ve all helped me so much, especially Pedro today, he was really helpful. Everyone in training, too. Every single day, everyone’s trying to help.
“I feel lucky to be watching the front players we’ve got – so many good players. I wouldn’t say I’m lucky to play in this team, I’ve worked hard, but I’m excited for the next few games.”
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to play in this team and I’m excited for the next few games.”

Ange Postecoglou praised Archie Gray as his debut performance leaves Tottenham fans stunned, this is the social media reaction…
@AndysArsenal: Monumental signing, not sure how you had no serious competition for Gray. Will have a quality season I reckon.
@BenW0086: Knew he was good / highly rated but honestly was really impressed. His first game for us and out of position at CB but was so composed – great passing, calm on the ball and also put in a few very good tackles. Kid is going to the top.
@conorthfc_: He’s a natural born footballer. If I didn’t know he was a 6/RB I’d have thought we signed him to be a CB, and that was his natural position. Take another £15m if you want honestly
@BarabusLittle: Just been looking at those tweets like a proud dad. Go on Archie lad!
@KalatrixB: was thinking of Leeds fans while watching today’s game, just how much he probably meant to you guys..will be rooting for Leeds to be back in PL next season, thank you!
@EthanMuggers: He was great. The best player in the first half no doubt. He played in a back 4 with a striker at LB, Skipp at CB and a 3rd choice keeper and looked so impressive and comfortable. He’s such a good player all around
@AaacccccCcc: Said when he left that by end of season they will think 40m was peanuts. Looks like they are already deciding that.
@RiddingP: I didn’t realise how gutted I was that he’s gone till I saw this thread . He’s an incredible talent
@geeman265: Spurs playing Archie as a CB! So good he’s doing well in that position as well! #LUFC
@FollowMeAndLUFC: I wouldn’t expect anything less.
@steviegee2890: Season there and I put money on he gets a call up. How well timed was that slide tackle. Spurs started him at cb and they said he was solid. I’m gutted we won’t see him progress another season with @LUFC
@ChefDavidMartin: Normally when a player leaves us they are dead to me, but this was a tough watch 😞
@COYSeminoles: Much better than I expected. Especially being out of his natural position. He’s gonna play this year. A lot.
@TheRobertPallin: Joke of a player. 😢
@GormanDave72: There is no doubt in my mind that 40 million will prove to be one of the bargains of all time
@RobboBhood: Mate he’s so composed on the ball and did well playing CB
@LUFCLUCY: look after him down there in the capital for us! yous have bagged a bargain there for our boy, wish him nothing but the best and I hope he goes on to have every success 🤍 #archiegray #lufc
@oJaayCo: Fair fucks to Leeds fans. They warned us about how good this lad is.. We will look after him
@jjrgreeney: I wasn’t salt about him going but now i kind of am?
@jamespowell363: What a player 👍🏼👏🏻
@paulbanglamung: We know. Now they know too. Lads different gravy..
@TSSLUFC: Pleased he’s started well, but this one is always going to hurt. 😥
@marshyleeds: Happy and sad in equal measure
@StephenBrewer86: Thank you Leeds United for Archie Gray I knew the guy was a don after speaking extensively with a friend of mine who’s a LUFC season ticket holder that called him a generational talent and me a cunt for asking but seeing how he’s already turning fellow supporters heads is great
@rickyzyx: Sorry to see him go but all the best in the future. Look after him spurs you got a gem there… 💎 🤍💙💛
