Ange Postecoglou explains why he confronted Tottenham fans after defeat at Bournemouth

Ange Postecoglou explains why he confronted Tottenham fans after his side’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Thursday night.

The Spurs boss says he is determined to change Tottenham’s fortunes after facing angry fans who booed and jeered after his team suffered a setback with Dean Huijsen’s header in the 17th minute winning it for the Cherries.

While the Australian chose not to elaborate on the intense moment after the final whistle, he acknowledged the emotional response from the supporters and vows to turn it around.

“I didn’t like what was being said because I’m a human being but you’ve got to cop it,” said Postecoglou, with Tottenham only winning one of their last six games in all competitions.

“I’ve been around long enough to know that when things don’t go well you’ve got to understand the frustration and the disappointment.

“They’re rightly disappointed tonight because we’ve let a game of football get away from us. I’m OK with all that.

“They’re disappointed and rightly so. They gave me some direct feedback, which I guess is taken onboard.

“All I can say is, I’m really disappointed with tonight and I’m determined to get it right and I will keep fighting until we do.”

Questioned what was said by those in the away end, Postecoglou replied: “Probably not for here, mate.”

Tottenham has started brightly, but struggled to create any chances during the 90 minutes and were fortunate not to lose by a bigger scoreline. Bournemouth midfielder Ryan Christie also saw his effort hit the post.

The result means that Tottenham fall below the Cherries, into 10th place in the Premier League table, ahead of their London derby at home to in form Chelsea.

Player ratings (per Sky Sports)

Bournemouth: Arrizabalaga (6), Smith (6), Zabarnyi (6), Huijsen (8), Kerkez (7), Adams (6), Christie (6), Semenyo (7), Kluivert (6), Tavernier (8), Evanilson (7).

Subs: Ouattara (5), Unal (n/a), Billing (n/a), Cook (6).

Tottenham: Forster (8), Gray (6), Dragusin (5), Davies (5), Udogie (6), Sarr (6), Bissouma (6), Maddison (6), Johnson (6), Solanke (5), Kulusevski (6).

Subs: Son (6), Bergvall (n/a), Werner (6), Porro (7).

Man of the match: Marcus Tavernier.

Iraola told Amazon Prime: “We didn’t kill the game in the second half when we were having the clear chances and luckily for us we could finish the job but it was a moment during the game where you say if we don’t kill them they are going to punish us.

“I don’t trust too much in this momentum thing or confidence. I think the league is so tight, the details are so small from a win to a loss, so we have to reset. Now we have a difficult game, Ipswich away with just two days of recovery and we have to not think in the standings, the points – just compete in every game.

“The end of the season is too far away still to be setting a points target.”

Here’s what Twitter users said as Ange Postecoglou explains why he confronted Tottenham fans after defeat at Bournemouth…

@Mo_Arsenal9: Tottenham fans are worst in the country. They don’t deserve anything good. Ange wanted to leave ever since he realised what a bunch of losers you were after City at home last year, he also hates the fact that your biggest legend is Jamie O Hara.

@Paul_Newman66: Three games ago Spurs pulled off one of the greatest results in Premier League history then drew the next two games with eight players missing injured. Yes we were awful tonight but 20 years of frustration has turned sections of our fan base hysterical. Ange isn’t the problem

@SussexTottenham: All the time a certain someone sits completely unaffected by this watching his profits grow. Season after season, year after year wondering what to pay himself in bonuses at the end of the financial year. Maybe if fans directed the anger at the chairman it could be different🤷‍♂️

@cal_sherry11: Embarrassing this, bit of perspective needed. Over a year into a project and you’ve got clowns acting up. Sack him and we’re back to square one

@alfieeharriss: Rubbish fans here, Levy is the problem

@Wayne306563731: 😂 levy must love you lot. Could’ve been chanting ENIC out but instead hammering the middle man as always! Fuck it sack another one and we can go through our 18 month cycle again 😂

@Spurs_Connect: Blame the owner for 24 years of failure. Wake up.

@TobyFMinch: Yeah, personal abuse towards our manger is the way 🤦‍♂️

@yidoo90: Now that same frustration needs to be leveled at the bloke who employed him

@MadGeordie3: Funny spurs think bigger than they are 🤣 Look at how tight the league is everybody is beating everybody. Only team that hasn’t been beaten more than once is Liverpool in the league. Look at spurs squad ffs that not a top 6 squad at all and it’s still early doors in the season

@alixsharkey_: This is just horrible. That was a poor performance, but this is no way to treat a manager whose team recently beat the champions 4-0 on their own ground.

@thfcrt: Actually amazing how thick most Spurs fans are. Regardless of if you’re Ange In or Out. This anger should be directed at Levy. The sole reason we have won 1 trophy in 24 years. No matter who is in charge nothing will change until it does at the top. Simple as.

@BenRX88: Shame to see this, decent guy who’s out of his depth. Looking forward to a new man coming in and doing this all again in a years time 🙄

@Lucky29Luke: 6 points off 4th spot and they are booing him 😂😂

@thfcjack__: Yet about 10 people ever show up in protest of levy. Can’t wait for the same mongs to get drawn into the next ‘project’.

@DarkRenegade000: How long will spurs fans keep falling for the same thing it’s levy that’s the problem

@scallop_101: Embarrassing booing at your manager like that. Shameful
