Andy Welsh doesn’t hold back as he slams Guiseley’s decision to sack him after five months

Andy Welsh has issued a statement and he doesn’t hold back as he slams Guiseley’s decision to sack him after just five months in charge.

He was dismissed on Tuesday, after a 3-2 defeat to Lancaster City, but now in response to this decision, Welsh has expressed his dissatisfaction, claiming that the club never communicated any aspirations for reaching the playoffs.

The club are still just three points from the Northern Premier League Premier Division playoff places with five games remaining, but the club still decided to axe him. He believes that this decision was unfair. See what he said below…

Welsh wrote: “On Tuesday I was relieved of my duties as manager at Guiseley AFC after only 5 months.

“For the reasons given I am very disappointed we were not given the 5 games remaining of the season to finish off what we started away at Worksop 5 months ago.

“We took over mid season with the team 13th in the table. and have left the club in 8th position 3 points outside the playoffs with a game in hand. The club never outlined any playoff aspirations and it was understood we had to work with the squad that was inherited due to all being under contract. We felt we did this and saw huge improvements in all players from the position we took over.

“We had a baptism of fire with 7 out of our first 10 league games away from home we picked up 20 points scoring 20 goals and started to create an identity of what we wanted to become as a team. During 23 league games we were in and out of the playoffs which we believe showed the change in mentality and consistency of the team to be in the playoff hunt with 5 games to go up against established teams who have been together for years.

“For these efforts I would like to Thank all the players efforts in the past 20 weeks you worked tirelessly to compete with the best and showed what you are capable of in some great games against the top teams in the division.

“Huge thank you to all the fans/volunteers your work never goes unnoticed and you made me, my family and management staff welcome. My assistant Andy Thomas who has been outstanding in our pursuit of creating a winning mentality and culture alongside the hardwork of Mark, Danny, Adam & Sam.

“Now life and football I believe are the same if you work hard for a small period of time you don’t always see rewards but as we all do as managers / Fathers/Mothers/Husbands and Wives we sacrifice, go above and beyond to try to constantly improve.

“However I believe the way to improve and progress you have to keep doing the small things consistently well over a long period of time to see the rewards. Unfortunately We live in a ‘Now’ Society both in life and football, this trend is very worrying as we all need time and remember ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’.

“Thanks for the opportunity and sometimes you have to suffer in life to be successful therefore i will look forward to a new challenge when the time is right. ”

Guiseley said in their decision to sack him: “Guiseley AFC have today parted company with frst team manager Andy Welsh.

“Whilst we appreciate that coming in mid season with a settled squad was a difficult task, unfortunately we haven’t seen the desired improvements and momentum in the team’s performances and results as we approach the final stages of the season and felt a change was needed to give the squad the best chance of picking up as many points as possible in the last five games, whilst we look to continue to build into next season with a settled team.

“We thank Andy for his time and efforts with the club, leading us to the county cup semi finals and keeping the side within three points of the playoffs, including a notable double against Radcliffe.

“Club captain Liam Tongue will lead the team as caretaker for the remainder of the season, with his assistant staff to be confirmed.”
