Andy Carroll speaks after making his debut in Dagenham’s 5-1 pre-season defeat at home to Crawley on Tuesday night.
It wasn’t the start he will have wanted, but the National League South side can only learn from it, a lot of work needed to turn the Daggers’ fortunes around.
The 36-year-old former Liverpool and Newcastle striker came off the bench with the score at 2-1 down to the League Two side.
Despite getting a warm reception from the 898 fans in attendance, Carroll couldn’t prevent his team from being outclassed.

Some of the quotes from fans on the signing of Andy Carroll before the game: “Oh, absolutely buzzing, to be honest.
“Like, I have a good feeling that, basically, having these new owners and having Andy Carroll in our club now, it’s just incredible.
“I think we’re gonna actually hopefully push through this and, basically, go more up at the table and all that, up the leagues and all that. So fingers crossed that basically goes very well.”
Another supporter said: “I was like, what the hell? What’s going on? It was just totally unbelievable because you don’t expect your whole your player of his calibre who still got legs on him to play at National League South level. You know? You don’t expect that at all.”

Andy Carroll said after the game: “It was brilliant. You know, I came out, soon as I stepped on the pitch, soon as I was warming up, they were singing my name and and cheering, and it’s just one of them feelings, you know, that you you you kinda explain and kinda describe, and it’s again tonight at the.
“I felt that as well. I mean, I’m investing not only my time, my money, and and I’m giving everything I can, you know, on and off the pitch and trying to bring everyone closer together, to produce something great.
“And I think it’s a club that, deserves it. You know, I think it’s in a great area. And, the fans tonight, again, the support, the players in the dressing room, the the backroom staff, and everything. I think it’s something that could be fantastic.
“I am looking forward to getting started, you know, on and off the pitch. It’s a complete different, role for me, and it’s something that I’m really looking forward to.”
Daggers boss Lee Bradbury expressed frustration over a loss marked by defensive errors, with four out of five goals conceded due to mistakes.
He said despite a decent start and some good spells, the team struggled against a sharp, quality opponent recently relegated from League One.
New players Donovan Wilson, George Marsh, Harvey Broad, and Andy Carroll made their debuts, showing promise and experience down the spine of the team, though still regaining sharpness.
Lee spoke about some improvement in ball movement but felt the team was stifled by the opposition’s pressure.
Absentees Reggie Young and Josh were mentioned, with Young held out due to stiffness from transitioning to full-time training.
Looking ahead, the focus for upcoming fixtures is on refining patterns of play, retaining possession, scoring goals, and keeping clean sheets to build confidence.
Social media users gave their reaction after Andy Carroll speaks on making his debut in Dagenham’s 5-1 pre-season defeat…
@JaiP72: Good for him. Gets to be near his kids and be a dad. Some things are more important than money
Ricardo Dias-Broughton: You know what I saw, I didn’t see a defeat. I saw a team (and we looked like a team) with plenty of potential. Yes we got Andy Carroll which is incredible (and yes I will be trying to get his attention to pose for a picture with my boy as we missed him tonight) but the other players we got I was impressed with and if we don’t bounce straight back up next season then you can call me Shirley…… excited for the start of this season. COYD’s
Terry Anson: it’s a friendly for a reason, getting players match fit.. but we need to sort it out before the season starts.
Barry Normal: I only watch the first 20 minutes but Daggers played the ball around nicely. Got in behind and around the keeper only for it to be cleared off the line.
Phil Fenn: Lee Bradbury knows what team he will put out for the first game. very optimistic for the coming season. hopefully the idiot shouting behind the goal relocates to somewhere else
Well it’s nice to be back. A new team being built and the nearly 900 there to see Andy debut. Still a class act. More steel in midfield and in the centre backs plus good crosses to feed Andy and others. Well played @crawleytown slick and compact ⚔️ pic.twitter.com/zHKS1OI994
