Alan Shearer goes viral after losing it with ex-referee Dermot Gallagher over a penalty incident during the Newcastle v Arsenal game.
Shearer expressed his frustration live on air after seeing a penalty awarded before being taken away from Newcastle during the opening stages of their Premier League fixture at the weekend.
In the eighth minute, Bruno Guimaraes’ powerful shot struck Jakub Kikor’s right arm in the penalty area, and a few moments, the referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot.
However, after a long VAR review, the decision ended up being overturned as it appeared that the ball hit Kiwior’s leg before hitting his arm.
Alan Shearer wasn’t convinced and voiced his anger at the controversial decision with Dermot Gallagher.

Look at Kiwior’s short… how the hell was he going to award a penalty for this? The more you look at it the more ridiculous it is pic.twitter.com/8w16IFzbiC

Speaking on the Premier League Productions show, Shearer asked: “You think Dermot or you know?” when a replay emerged on screen.
Gallagher replied: “Well I’m convinced it’s hit the top of his thigh.”
Shearer said: “Are you 100 per cent certain that hit the top of his leg and it’s an absolute howler from the referee?”
Gallagher hit back: “I think the fact is he’s given the penalty that I don’t think is handball.”
Shearer then added: “Can you answer the question?” before Gallagher responded: “Yeah I think it is a howler,”
Shearer quickly added: “Are you absolutely 100 per cent certain that has hit his leg on the replays that you’ve seen? Because I can’t see it, you must have better eyes than I have, and why’s it taken seven replays if it’s that certain?”
Ian Wright, sat next to Shearer, then added, “There it is. There it is” when the replays were played.
It proved to be a key moment in the match with Newcastle falling to a 2-0 defeat against the title-chasing Gunners.
Martin Odegaard put Arsenal in front with a long-range strike on 14 minutes, while a Fabian Schar own goal in the second half sealed the win.
This is how fans reacted as Alan Shearer goes viral after losing it with Dermot Gallagher over the Newcastle penalty incident…
@Allanwild: This is why ex players shouldn’t be refs.. it clearly hits his leg.. doesn’t even look like it hits the arm. Even if it hits the arm it’s still not a pen as it hits the leg first
@philrich_UTFR: @alanshearer are you having a fucking laugh!! It hit his leg you muppet, now I don’t claim to be a a referee however HANDball surely needs to hit a hand, does it not? #muppet
@GoonerSpark2012: That’s embarrassing. I’ve never felt sorry for Dermot Gallagher before but watching this I do! It’s never a penalty and a time when VAR has actually done it’s job.
@AFC_Nadeem44: It’s epic because Dermot Gallagher has deserved this peppering for ages, but when it did come, the person handing it out was in the wrong ffs. Arsenal legends/pundits are way too professional, they need to start dishing it out on him, he’d be completely stumped lol.
@mish_leady: Shearer’s right to be frustrated but my god leave poor Dermott alone, he’s not the one making the decision.
@kevin_busby: Hits his leg so it is an obvious error, can’t be giving handballs for balls hitting a players leg. Unless it’s Liverpool then of course it’s totally acceptable. Poor Hammers didn’t get one today & the bloke caught it! 🤣👍🤣
@chrisnufcuk: It’s just guess work, like Joelinton’s non-goal against Southampton. They don’t have a clue. Only looked at one camera angle for 3-4mins then still asked the referee to go to the monitor
@GarethCoffey84: Wasn’t a penalty they got the call right but some days it’s about getting it right others it’s obvious errors, just a shambles
@StephenMKiernan: Don’t think he’s saying VAR got it wrong, just the picking and choosing when to apply the technology. For example, West Ham denied a pen for handball…never even went to VAR. That’s the very definition of corruption… same rule applied differently
@Geordioca: Shearer has been expressing these levels of frustration at the use of VAR for months. You just haven’t been watching.
@RomellOuterSpac:
Shearer’s bias coming to the surface, he couldn’t help himself.
He should apologize to Gallagher today. It was a very obvious penalty.
If Shearer really can’t see the ball hit the players leg, he needs glasses.
@SmithyWFC85: Will he be apologising to Dermot for this outburst. Poor guy was just giving an opinion many agreed with ?
@StevenF17066810: Imagine being this angry over a penalty that wasn’t a penalty the big weirdo
@hithisiswes: WTF is wrong with Shearer here?! Don’t know what channel he’s working on, but he clearly has a different ‘persona’ here. Proper angry, nasty prick. Not to mention he’s totally working and Gallagher is correct.
@hendoarsenal: That’s embarrassing. Come off it Alan. @alanshearer
@DexTalksBall: Lol never even hit his arm even after hitting his leg 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@boybrown408: Shearer, now can’t argue against any referees decisions in the future.💯 biased opinion. Ref called it a penalty (from real play) VAR correctly overruled it, the Ref had another view and agreed with VAR. Yet Shearer after slow motion replays still argues the case on the decision
@sarcasticgoone2: Its absolutely clear it hit his leg. The embarrassing thing is that it took seven replays for them to work that out.
@kingkongldb: Trying to bully him into saying something he can’t see, his leg is in front of his arm at point of contact, so how can the ball hit his arm fully if his leg is in the way. Shearer just losing his temper coz it’s his club
@bobbi_walker: Clear and obvious yet took 7 replays and 5 minutes to couu my e to a decision. Hmmmmm. However, Arsenal deserved their win today.
@DexterCousins: It clearly hits the arsenal players thigh – VAR got this right. Shearer was an embarrassment
