Absolute scenes for Newcastle after stoppage-time winner in 7-goal thriller against Leeds

There were absolute scenes for Newcastle after a stoppage-time winner in the 7-goal thriller against Leeds on Wednesday night.

The Magpies’ 4-3 win ended Leeds’ unbeaten run with a dramatic 102nd-minute winner from Harvey Barnes.

Leeds had gone ahead through Brenden Aaronson (32′), Newcastle levelled through Barnes (36′), before Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted a penalty to make it 2-1 on the verge of half time.

Joelinton grabbed an equaliser after the break (54′), Aaronson restored Leeds’ lead (79′), only for Bruno Guimaraes to make it 3-3 from the spot in stoppage time, then came Barnes’ decisive strike to send the home fans wild.

The result sees Newcastle sit 6th with 32 points from 21 games played, while Leeds are 16th with 22 points and 8 points above the drop zone.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I’m going to struggle to do it [to make sense of the game] because it was a crazy game. We weren’t at our best today, Leeds played very well but we had a spirit and a togetherness and a fight that we were never out of the game. We kept going until the end and it’s a great win.

“No Premier League game, as the table would show you, is easy this year and the win is a valuable result.

“Coming from behind, we haven’t done that this season yet so that’s a great thing to do. We have been on the rec end a couple of times this season and it really hurt so this is the better way to script it.”

On Fabian Schar’s injury: “Huge concern, I think it’s quite a serious one, it’s an ankle one. He’s gone to hospital. He has been such a brilliant player for us.”

Newcastle matchwinner Harvey Barnes speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I’ve always had a great record against them [Leeds] and I don’t know what it is, I always seem to score and hopefully it doesn’t stop.

“It was mad. It was weird, some good moments and then others when they were on top. Not performance-wise where we want it to be but we got back in the game and the finish to the game is incredible. We are a team full of character and you could see that towards the end.”

On his goal: “It’s a little bit of instinct, there’s that much chaos in the box, it’s just about finding that bit of composure and getting it towards goal. It’s an important one. I’m delighted with that tonight.”

Leeds manager Daniel Farke speaking to Sky Sports: “Football. Sometimes you have such a heart-breaking moment at the end of an away game. It was a top game and advertisement for the Premier League. A great game. Of course there were mistakes, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many goals.

“One of our best away performances here at Newcastle, such a tough place to go and to show such a brave performance, I am pretty proud of my lads. It was a bit like basketball game in the last minutes and could fall for both sides. The team that lost this game would always say ‘you should have calmed the game down’ but both teams went for it. We were on the wrong end of the result.”

On conceding a late penalty: “It was more like on the line, but not one intention to play the ball so in this sense of the game it should never be a penalty but we have to accept it. There was a lot of pressure on the referees with the whole home crowd looking for a penalty.”

Farke speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “It’s football, it was a great advertisement for the Premier League. A game full of class. Of course there were mistakes otherwise there wouldn’t be goals. But more or less football how we want to see it – emotional, offensive, great from us here at Newcastle. It was always clear the not-losing streak would come to an end and I would prefer to do it like this, a top performance from the lads.

“Of course it’s heart-breaking to concede a penalty in the 91st minute and the 12th minute of added time, the winner for them. Heart-breaking.

“We should have been a bit smarter in the final stages in terms of game management because it was like a basketball game and a point for us would have been a bit more valuable. We were a bit naïve.”

On conceding a late penalty: “If this is a penalty in this situation then I’ve got no clue about football. It is not in the sense of the game to give away such a decisive penalty. Of course it’s heart-breaking for the lads.”

Leeds goalscorer Brenden Aaronson, who also conceded a late penalty, speaking to Sky Sports: “Of course I am devastated, it’s annoying when you score two and mentally I turned off for a minute and I know I can’t lift my hand like this around the box. It’s football at the end of the day. Of course, I am mad at myself but I think we could have done better defending on a couple of occasions.

“To come here and go up three times in a row and almost tie and almost win the game shows how good this team is and we need to keep going from here.”

“In this league, if you take five minutes off the other team is so good that they score. We absorb a bit too much in moments and take our foot off the gas, but the way we are playing at the minute, to come here and almost win and tie, is unbelievable and we just need to go from here.”
