Absolute howler from Okonkwo sees Swansea come from behind to beat Wrexham

An absolute howler from Arthur Okonkwo sees Swansea come from behind to beat Wrexham in the Welsh derby on Friday night.

A stoppage-time winner gifted by a late error from the Wrexham goalkeeper, who dropped a header into the path of substitute Adam Idah to make it 2-1 to the Swans.

Wrexham had gone ahead via an own goal by Swansea’s Cameron Burgess on 14 minutes, with Zan Vipotnik then levelling for Swansea on 20 minutes with a deflected shot.

The win, Swansea’s third in six games under new coach Vitor Matos, sees them climb up to 17th place in the Championship, two points behind Wrexham. This was the first league meeting between the Welsh clubs in 22 years.

Swansea head coach Vitor Matos, per BBC Sport:

“I think it was a really emotional game like we all expected. I think we started the game a little bit nervous.

“Wrexham started the game pressing really high, man-marking that made us a little bit sloppy in some moments with the ball, so it did not create the momentum we wanted from the start.

“After the goal, the reaction we had was brilliant. We bounced back perfectly, starting to find momentum, starting to find the right players, having the time, controlling the tempo, pressing, shooting, trying to create chances against a really good team. So that’s what we did. I think we got the reward of that.”

Matos, per Sky Sports:

“It was a derby and these games have these kind of moments. We started the game a little bit nervous and anxious, then there was the own goal.

“But more importantly than the result for us was the way we bounced back from that situation we found ourselves in.

“Adam is a striker and he has the hunger to score. He wanted to have an impact on the game and I’m really happy for him. He helped the team and the impact players can have when they come off the bench is massive.”

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson, per BBC Sport:

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson: “It’s a tough way to lose a game of football. We had a great start and looked in good control.

“We made a lot of mistakes but so did they. It was that kind of game.

“The first goal we concede is a double ricochet and the second one obviously is a tough one to take.

“It’s a very strange goal to concede but Arthur has been a colossus of a goalkeeper for us. He will get a lot of support from us because he has won us a lot of points.

“We gave the ball away a lot and we knew if we strung passes together against them, they are quite an open team and we would get enough chances.

“We didn’t do that enough but still we should be coming away from the game with a point.”

Parkinson, per Sky Sports:

“It’s very frustrating. It’s difficult to legislate for those two goals that have gone against us tonight. A double deflection for the first, and then with the second I feel for Arthur because he has been outstanding for us, not just this season but over the last few seasons.

“We do feel for him tonight, but it’s one of those moments where it should never end up in the back of our net. It’s a tough way to lose a game.

“We wouldn’t have got to where we are without his contribution, and he’s pulled off some incredible saves this season in big moments. He’ll need picking up, but we’ll pick him up and be ready for the Boxing Day game.”

Here’s how fans reacted after absolute howler from Okonkwo sees Swansea come from behind to beat Wrexham…

@JoshuaWebb57910: ‘’Dropped it like it was hot’’ against Snoop’s Swansea 🤣

@Niallr129034: When did Wrexham sign Onana?? 😮

@BS3Rob: “Dropped it like it was hot” FFS 🤣🤣 Sky Sports casually sneaking in the Snoop Dogg Swansea reference

@WrexhamRedsNews: He’s been on fire all season. One to forget but we move on 💪

@stevetudorjame1: One mistake for a long time from arthur BUT every team who beats wrexham it’s like they won the champions league get a grip you’re only here for the WREXHAM 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

@MichaelBowers15: Very Jason Steele & Lee Camp esque. What a mistake.

@Lijoh1: We’ve been pretty mediocre for majority of the game unfortunately. They made a huge error to give us the lead, we didn’t actually score a goal & we handed them the game with an error in return. Sums up the game that really 🙈

@MattRob97198389: As much as it’s a bad mistake, the loss isn’t all on Arthur. You cannot sit back and create nothing for 90 minutes and expect to come away with a win in this league. We’ll be fine but parky needs to realise we’re shooting ourselves in the foot by being so passive.

@dezroberts1: Got what we deserved. Awful game of football between two poor teams, but at least they tried to play football. Our tactics after going a goal up was absolutely abysmal. Those tactics won’t work in the championship

@Oliver_yjb: Stick that on your documentary lads hahahahhahahah

@bcfc_ellis: Got a history of dropping it doesn’t he 👍👍
