‘Absolute filth’ – 17 year old Chris Rigg scores with audacious backheel against Middlesbrough

‘Absolute filth’ – That’s fans fans are saying as 17 year old Chris Rigg scores with an audacious backheel against Middlesbrough.

Chris Rigg put Sunderland ahead on 25 minutes, the ball broke loose after a deflected shot, with Rigg getting onto it, touched it just past the keeper, looked to be going out wide of the goal, but he knew what he was doing, netting with style from a tight angle.

Middlesbrough made the better start of the two teams, with an early chance coming to Tommy Conway, who struck the crossbar with a header from close range, but the intent faded as the half progressed.

As half time approached, Romaine Mundle went down in the box but no penalty was given. Then there was almost an equaliser in added time as Isaiah Jones finds Latte Lath and he flicked just over.

Middlesbrough struggled to create anything clear and obvious in this second half, Boro described as wasteful in front of goal during the first half and uninventive in the second.

Sunderland held on for the win, top of the league for the time being ahead of the Saturday 3pm kick offs.

Don Goodman on Sky Sports Football: “Wow, wow, wow. That’s all I can say: wow! That is an incredible finish.”

“That’s the way Middlesbrough can hurt Sunderland – that pace in behind.

“When they get the ball into wide areas and get crosses into the box, Middlesbrough look dangerous.

“But Chris Rigg does well to win the ball back this time.”

Adam Lanigan (BBC Sport at the Stadium of Light): “Cheeky from Chris Rigg to find the net with a backheel. A mess from a Middlesbrough perspective with centre-half and goalkeeper on the floor in the area.

“The 17-year-old has his first goal since April. That came in a 5-1 thumping by Blackburn. This one will count for a whole lot more.

“The Sunderland fans are in full voice chanting, ‘Chris Rigg, ole, ole, ole’!

“A fascinating, breathless half of football ends with big moments at either ends.

“Sunderland wanted a penalty, Middlesbrough should have had an equaliser.

“Boro have been more composed and fluid over the piece but they trail to Chris Rigg’s goal.

“Sunderland have been dangerous on the break and full of youthful exuberance, personified by Rigg in his backheel.

“More of the same second half, please.”

Mark Drury (BBC Tees commentator): “It’s the local lad, Rigg just pounces on it, it’s a backheel finish.

“It’s a really good improvised finish from Chris Rigg.”

Chris Rigg, 17, turns down Premier League interest to sign his first pro contract at Sunderland

Sunderland’s Regis Le Bris on the goalscorer Chris Rigg: “I don’t know [how he has that maturity], some players don’t have that maturity at 30.

“He wants to learn and has the personality to play in front of this crowd, who were amazing today.

“This midfield is very young, this team is very young, and I think that mixed culture is very interesting for us.”

Middlesbrough’s Michael Carrick: “[Trai Hume’s first-half challenge on Emmanuel Latte Lath] was a lot stronger than what the referee gave, it was reckless and dangerous, he’s gone through Emmanuel with excessive force. For me it is a red card, 100 per cent.

“Overall, we took the game to them.

“The goal is the goal, it comes after a deflection but that’s the way things are going for us at the moment.

“It was an even game and, if anything, we were the better team.”

Before the game, Chris Rigg praised Regis Le Bris and his effect on the club since his arrival as head coach at Sunderland, who before today’s game sat 2nd in the Championship table.

Luke O’Nien said: “Run of form at the start of the season… how much do you put that down to the new gaffer?”

Chris Rigg responded: “I think he’s been excellent, to be honest, coming In, obviously by yourself, he would have been nervous. New language, new culture. But I think he’s done excellent so far.”

Luke O’Nien: “In terms of aspirations for yourself, the club, what does it look like?”

Chris Rigg: “I think Just developing. I think everyone can see how, how much we are developing, so developing as a player, as a person and as a club, really. So just keep, keep going the way we are going.”
