‘Absolute disgrace’ – Middlesbrough fans furious as Neil Warnock decision is made

‘Absolute disgrace’ is what some of the words used by furious Middlesbrough fans as they react to a decision made over Neil Warnock.

The 72 year old has been fined £7,000 following multiple breaches of FA Rule E3 that followed Boro’s EFL Championship match against Swansea City on Saturday the 6th of March 2021.

The manager admitted that comments he made during post-match interviews constituted improper conduct in that they question the integrity of the match official, implied bias, were personally offensive and bring the game into disrepute contrary to FA Rule E3.1.

An independent Regulatory Commission was subsequently convened and imposed an appropriate sanction.

Andre Ayew scored a stoppage-time penalty for the second time in as many games to secure the win after he earlier put Swansea ahead, though Middlesbrough deservedly got one back in the 91st minute through Sam Morsy.

Ayew scored from the spot in the 97th minute after referee Gavin Ward had initially given a corner. He went and celebrated by running towards his coaches in the dugout, only for Warnock to watch on in outrage.

Possibly on the advice of his assistant, ward gave a penalty deeming that George Saville had fouled Jake Bidwell.

Warnock was berating the officials for much of the first half, with some of his defenders taking some of the flak, though one controversial moment saw referee Ward blow his whistle for what has been judged to be a foul by Bolasie on Jay Fulton just as Bola unleashed a powerful drive which flew beyond Woodman and into the net.

Warnock urged his players to push on in search of victory, but it was Swansea who claimed onto all three points and yet another important win.

The late drama left Warnock annoyed at the officials with Swansea going within a point of the automatic promotion places with two games in hand in the Championship table – at the time.

Neil Warnock said after a penalty for Swansea in the 96th minute of the match against Boro: “I have to ask Steve for his father’s number, Keith. He must have contacts somewhere.”

Keith Cooper, the father of the Swansea manager, was a past referee in the EFL and the Premier League.

“I’m just disappointed,” he told Sky Sports after the match. “I thought the lads put in a really good shift, we played some good football and were best side on the pitch. I didn’t see them having many chances at all.

“We’ve been let down by poor officials, nothing else.

“Ten minutes gone, [Ryan] Manning took [Anfernee] Dijksteel out, not one of four officials saw it, and it’s ended up with him coming off injured. He has deliberately kicked out at him and taken him down.

“Bola is a certain goal or a penalty to us. It’s a dive if anything from their lad. He gets the ball, Bolasie, it should be a penalty or a goal.

“How can I come on here now and not get fined? I’ve got to be careful, haven’t I? It’s the worst afternoon for many weeks and we have had a few of these recently.

“You saw the penalty the other night at Stoke, never a penalty in a million years and they won the game! So really, by that reckoning, they should get promotion if they keep getting the right referees.”

“They are all heroes, they all want the celebrity status, don’t they?

“It’s wrong. My lads have been let down by a team of officials who weren’t good enough today.

“[PGMOL chief] Alan Wiley has got a job on his hands, because they are not good enough, it’s not right. It shouldn’t be decided on an official.

“Last week, against Stoke, it wasn’t good enough. I don’t know where they get it from.

“95 percent of the time they get it right, but because they’ve never played the game and don’t understand getting kicked, or being conned, they don’t know the big decisions. That’s what lets them down, all of them.”

Furious Middlesbrough fans and a few other supporters of other clubs react as the Neil Warnock decision is made, see what they had to say below…

@dwils26: @FA did you see your referee? He needed questions about his integrity given the goal he disallowed and the penalty he gave! Not to mention the red card he missed on Dijksteel! Once again you let Boro down but as ever I am not surprised as you shaft us every chance you get! 3 Pts!

@Boston1960Lee: Hi, can you do an interview and tell us what you think honestly? No because it costs me money… Bye.

@JohnM_25: How much has the ref been charged?

@Kevinho_2: Hope he refuses to pay

@mfcAlfie_: fined for talking facts. jesus

@GaryStevens1962: This is an absolute outrage. Why is the football family not ranting and raving about this as much as they do about VAR? Warnock was just stating what people were thinking and protecting his players. How much has the fraudulent ref been fined? GS

@Lucdoggy: Why are referees exempt from criticism?? Everyone else in the sport has to deal with it why can’t they

@AlfieKuy: Absolute disgrace from the FA

@SamCoulton_: As ever, fuck the @FA and the @EFL. Fined for voicing an opinion. Didn’t know we lived in North Korea!

@Snappp_FMS: Never known anything like it

@jacwillisccfc: Fuck the FA

@XxxJasie: don’t see the refs getting fined do you?

@CorkingNeil: FA Rule E3 – the ref can be as completely useless as possible without any criticism at all, what a farce, shows what a joke the FA really are, time to move this organisation out the game, yet they let that scandal go on with coaches with young boys in the recent documentary on bbc

@tom_mcgarry17: Fined £7,000 for speaking the truth? Smh

@tackjemple7: The Slavia Prague player who racially abused Kamara will be fined less, such is the state of football. Authorities should hang their heads in shame. Fining players obviously isn’t a sufficent enough punishment for racism they should be booted out of the game completely.

@charlie1247953: Bullshit only saying the truth and what everyone is thinking

@VincentPUFC: The best manager in the country. Disgrace how the so called governing bodies handle this. Gavin Ward gets away unpunished…. smell the coffee football fans, this is corruption.

@ironopolis69: How much are they gonna fine Gavin Ward for being an incompetent bag of shite?

@djstormo: How about dock the refs money when they make loads of mistakes.

More fans were furious as a decision on Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock is made…

ryanwoodyyy: Man was telling the truth ffs. Someone tell me if the ref has been charged id like to know

@mfc_1876: Absolute joke this! The FA is corrupt. What about the ref that didn’t give the pen against Rovers? And now this ref has nothing done either! What a joke! UTB

@MFCTRAV: Disgraceful.

@IanLynas72: Scandalous, but sadly unsurprising. He should public state that we never want that incompetent ref again. Make everyone aware of what has happened.

@PaulThompson50: Fined for voicing his opinion, might as well be in fucking China

@demonbalor2020: How dare he criticise a referee who clearly can’t do the job.

@iammark40: Should be able to sue the fa when a match is lost due to a dodgy ref.

@DiscipleBrand: If Boro fans all chipped in £1 or more we could pay the fine for him. And give the FA more money to train referees better. The Fact that Several referees still have a job is beyond a joke

@Pyro_boro: Well, guess the FA didn’t like being called out for being improper.

@MatthewBye13: Assume the ref has been fined the same then???

@kirkham_tony: No comment I might get fined
