‘A disgrace!’ – Neil Warnock was left stunned at Leeds being denied a ‘certain’ penalty in the game vs Portsmouth on Sunday.
On the 10th minute in the Pompey box, Regan Poole blocked a shot in a melee before Dan James went to ground as Matt Ritchie swung at an attempted clearance kick… referee Robert Jones ignoring calls for a spot kick.
Sky Sports’ Neil Warnock: “, Absolutely, it’s a disgrace. Rob Jones is in a good position. He puts his arm up as if he’s going to blow, then he puts it down. They know the laws, they just don’t know the game. In the Premier League that’s a certain penalty. You’re not going to get a more obvious penalty than that. It’s unbelievable to not give a penalty.”
Lucy Ward (Former Leeds striker on ITV): “I’ve seen it a few times now and I think that should have been a penalty.”
Sky Sports’ Lee Hendrie: “I think that’s a penalty, I really do. For me, it’s a stonewall penalty. James gets gets contact on the ball, Ritchie doesn’t. I think Ritchie is very fortunate.”

In the second half, there were two huge saves from Schmid to somehow keep Portsmouth on level terms.
Then on the 61st minute, shortly after missing a glaring opportunity, Bishop made no mistake as he ran onto an Ogilvie ball down the channel and lifted the ball over Meslier who didn’t know whether to stick or twist.
With less than 15 minutes remaining, Firpo, from distance, saw his effort crash off the bar. James picked up the scraps and tried to head home the rebound, only for it to go wide.
Down the other end now, Murphy then cut in and curled towards goal, beating Meslier but it came back off the outside of the post.
Pompey made it tough for the Leeds defence by putting on the pressure right until the end and another fantastic save by Schmid right at the end saw Pompey hold on to the three points.
>@BerenCross: “Leeds had their chances. Piroe missed two. Solomon and Byram forced good saves. They should have had an early penalty. But, it just never felt like they were in control and playing the game they wanted. #lufc”
The result sees Leeds fail to extend their lead at the top of Championship and remain level on points with second-placed Sheffield United. Pompey climb to 17th, seven points above danger.
“You’ve got to give them credit”

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho:
“Really impressed with the performance, particularly how we came out after halftime. We put them under tremendous pressure for 15-20 minutes up until the goal, naturally after that we sat off a bit but fully deserved on effort, work rate and application. So really pleased with the result and performance.
“We earned the right to be in the game until half time by sitting in and working half. We then made a couple of adjustments, asking the players to go a few yards higher. And to be honest the lads executed it brilliantly.
“The atmosphere was great, especially when you attack the Fratton end, it does have an effect on players, both us and the opposition. I think that played a part.”

Portsmouth captain Marlon Pack told ITV:
“We knew the atmosphere would be good, we had to use that as fuel. We had to ride our luck at times and Nico was brilliant in goal.
“If you can’t play in that atmosphere where can you play? It’s an intimidating place to come. Them being that 12th man really drove us on, especially at the end when a bit of fatigue sneaks in.
“The club have gone through some tough times, there’s still a lot of work to do, a lot of points to play for, but we have put ourselves in a good position,” Pack said. “We’ll enjoy this one but then we have an even bigger game to come on Wednesday and our full focus is on that.
“If we can retain our Championship status it would mean even more to me than winning League One last season.”
Pompey match-winner Colby Bishop told ITV: “For me that’s personally the best win since I have been here. It means a lot to beat a team like that with those players.”
Bishop beat Illan Meslier to the ball to poke the winning goal in from an angle off the far post and admitted: “I didn’t think I was going to get there but luckily it went in. I thought he (the keeper) is going to come and can I nick a penalty? But he didn’t come so I thought just get it on target.”
Bishop missed the start of the season after undergoing a heart procedure and said: “When you go through something like I did and the support I got every day – I can’t speak highly enough of the people in this city.
“Walking in from the car park you feel like nobody is going to come here and win.”
Twitter users reacted with Neil Warnock stunned at Leeds being denied ‘certain’ penalty vs Portsmouth…
@PatFlavin1: The referee then signalling that Richie got the ball is bizarre – seriously needs to be investigated.
@FC_Liversedge: Everywhere else in the world it’s a penalty!! Not one person could have possibly not seen that at all!! Decisions like that don’t get missed at all!!! Just blatant rigging of results which can be done with var too!! No excuse Leeds have been shit today! Different game if given
@Martinlufc95: Absolute clear penalty…. just shows how refs are absolutely shit in football now with their decision making
@Lucaslufc4life8: @Specsavers have you got any urgent appointments for Robert Jones cause how is this not a penalty
@craigkiely123: Just used of these referees being horrible now
@joshakers93: Another massive issue with VAR is that Premier League referees no longer feel responsible of making big decisions. Rob Jones instinct was to blow the whistle but then weirdly stopped himself. Let them make the big calls or we’ll continue having this pathetic indecisiveness.
@EaglenM: As soon as the ref didn’t give this you knew it wasn’t going to end well today! Ref has no bollocks cos he doesn’t have VAR to back him up or give it if he doesn’t! This could literally be the downfall for Leeds, can imagine not even auto promotion now!
@JenoLUFC: Typical refs! We will get another apology letter!
@Robertkas88: Fucking scandalous decision!! We go 1-0 up it’s a different game then because Portsmouth have to come at us, as Leeds as it gets 👊🏻
@gibbzi93: Good to see the standard of @EFL referees is still at the Stevie Wonder level…
@craggsy82: I’d love to see the referees match report for why he didn’t award a penalty kick for the hack on Dan James. #lufc
@Mark1461: That penalty decision gets worse after every watch, the chances we created and didn’t score as well, but fair play to pompey they bullied us all over the pitch today but we lost that game with shit finishing and terrible ref decision #lufc
@LUFC_LEW02: Robbed of a penalty, ref was shite for both teams, Piroe should’ve had 2, defenders gates playing with meslier, I hate meslier, gruev starts for no reason, always bottle it against shit teams, cba
@1troggy_FFC: So many wrong decisions from Rob Jones today in the @Pompey v @LUFC game, including a blatant penalty. He was terrible at Fulham recently and I’m guessing that’s why he has been demoted to the championship, well IMO he’s not fit to referee full stop!! @FA_PGMOL
@mjgarrity72: Isn’t he a Premier League ref? Used to relying on VAR – definite penalty #lufc
@LeedsAllOver: I don’t think there’s an angle you can review of that challenge and not think it’s as blatant a penalty as you can possibly get. #lufc
@EllandRoadJoker: Disgraceful from Rob Jones, no excuse for missing that penalty shout with his positioning. #lufc
