8th tier club, ‘bidding for stardom’, keep being mistaken for near-namesake Wrexham

8th tier club Wroxham, ‘bidding for stardom’, keep being mistaken for near-namesake Wrexham, with a documentary to premiere.

The Norfolk based club has gained many football fans’ attention on social media, capitalising on its similar name to Wrexham AFC, the club famously taken over by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Due to the similarity in names, Wroxham often gets mistaken for Wrexham AFC, with the non league club  seeing some rather amusing moments of fans or visitors arrive expecting to see the Hollywood-owned club but end up at Wroxham instead.

Wroxham FC aims to leverage this confusion for its benefit, hopefully with a boost in investment, partnerships and a rise in attendances and have even made their own documentary series titled “Welcome to Wroxham,” similarly to the successful “Welcome to Wrexham” series.

Chairman of Wroxham FC, James Blower, said while the two clubs sounded similar, his missed out on Hollywood investment “by just one vowel”.

Now they hope that with a four-part fly-on-the-wall documentary series will help “improve the club’s fortunes”.

Wroxham, currently sit five tiers below Wrexham, sitting second from bottom in the Isthmian League North Division.

“We want to get more fans through the gate; we want to get a higher profile and ultimately, more commercial partners and investment,” said Blower, per BBC News.

“We missed out on Hollywood investment by one vowel and this is a chance to showcase all that’s good about our club.

“People phone the club by accident or go on the website and they’ve got the wrong club.

“We also had an incident with a commercial partner who got incredibly excited when dealing with us.

“But then I realised the girls in the marketing team thought they were going to be working with Ryan Reynolds and not James Blower, and they were obviously very disappointed when they saw the reality.”

Wroxham midfielder Jordan King said despite the clubs’ similar names, footballing conditions were very different: “They [Wrexham players] probably get their meals done for them. But we’re non-league, we’re part-time and we train twice a week.

“We’ve also got families and jobs so we have to balance work.”

He adds that Wroxham was “hinting” at playing a friendly against Wrexham.

“In a one-off game we’d always fancy ourselves against someone else,” he added.

78 year old volunteer groundsman Barry Letten said a confused fan once arrived at the club’s Trafford Park ground.

“They came through the gate and asked ‘Are we in Wrexham?’

“I said ‘No, you’re in Wroxham in Norfolk’,” he said.

“He decided he wasn’t going to get to Wrexham in time for kick-off so he stayed here and watched the game.”

@DForrester11: I’m from Wrexham & a Wrexham fan. Years ago, when I started a new job in Sussex, one of the directors asked me where I was from, “Wrexham in North Wales”, I replied; He then tried to convince me that I was wrong (about my hometown) and that I must actually be from Norfolk. 🤦 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
