5 minute VAR review leaves Sean Dyche riled up while Rob Edwards vents anger at Wolves players

A ridiculous 5 minute VAR review leaves Nottingham Forest boss Sean Dyche riled up while Rob Edwards vents anger at his Wolves players.

Forest had a goal disallowed late in the first half when Jesus headed in, only for it to be ruled out for offside due to teammate Dan Ndoye interfering with Johnstone’s line of sight.

The decision was straightforward, considering how quick all the other offside calls have been this season. Yet this one for some reason took so that that everyone was in the stadium was left frustrated, fans chanting “f*** VAR” and “boring, boring”.

Following a lengthy VAR review, and referee Tim Robinson being sent to the monitor and also spending a considerable time in front of it, a decision was made and he spoke of the decision to rule out of the goal.

Igor Jesus made sure he scored his first Premier League goal in the 72nd minute with a header from a cross sent in Omari Hutchinson after Wolves keeper Sam Johnstone failed to claim it.

The result sees Forest sit 16th with 15 points, and 4 points clear of the drop zone. For Wolves, they remain bottom and winless. Still on 2 points after 14 games played.

Wolves manager Rob Edwards speaking to BBC MOTD: “Not a good night for us. Performance level was poor. The levels we set against Villa [on Sunday] we didn’t get near that. Really frustrating.

“It’s a mentality thing and a physical thing. We have to fight to win a game of football. In the first half we were very passive, back and sideways too much, didn’t run forward enough. Physically we looked weak. Really frustrating. There was a reaction in the second half but we need more if we’re going to win matches. The fans want to get behind this team I can feel that but tonight it was hard to get behind this team.”

How to turn things around? “It’s just working every day. We saw a good week of training and a good performance at the weekend. For whatever reason tonight they haven’t turned up. We have to try and find the right way. That’s only done with hard work and doing the right things every day.

“One or two half chances, we were fairly solid and we didn’t give loads of chances away. There’s some solidity there but the overriding feeling is that I don’t want to see that again.

“I haven’t felt a lack of belief, there is a fighting spirit. It was a different team that turned up today. We go away and try to turn things around.”

Edwards speaking to Sky Sports“Really disappointed. Pretty angry from the levels on Sunday we got nowhere near that. We lost the game in the first half, no intensity. Didn’t take risks, played too safe. It was almost like we were waiting to get beat and that hurts. Bit of a reaction in second half but not enough. Really disappointing night.

“I was looking forward to tonight, if we could’ve kept that level up from the weekend this was a game we could win. It wasn’t a good game of football. I think if we had hit where we were on Sunday we could’ve got something from the game, could’ve won it.

“It wasn’t a reflection of what I want my team to look like. The lads knew at half-time we weren’t happy, there was a bit of a reaction but we need more. We kept going, got into some good areas, Jhon Arias could’ve got a goal and one or two half chances. But we have to be more ruthless, we have to find more.

“I don’t think we gave loads away. I’m not going to blame quality, we have to find the answers. It was only three days ago that there was a lot of quality on show. It’s there but we have to bring it out of ourselves.”

Mental or physical problems? “Both – mentality and physical. We have to find a way to bring out the best in ourselves. The crowd will be with us if we show intent. They want to get behind the team but you have to run, fight and look like you want to win. That wasn’t there tonight.

“We knew it was a big challenge coming in. That’s really evident. We’ll work to try and turn things around. We saw progress in the last week but this is a setback. We have to work hard to put things right in the next week.”

Edwards in the press conference: “Yeah, I’m really disappointed tonight. Compared to the levels that we set on Sunday, I try not to keep reflecting back to the weekend. It was hard not to, it was only three days ago, it was almost like the opposite, the opposite tonight.

“I asked the players at half time, are you scared? I asked them that. It looked in the first half like we were very passive, we didn’t play forward, it looked like we were afraid to make a mistake. Maybe afraid of the reaction from the crowd, I don’t know, I don’t know, maybe that’s human nature.

“But yeah, I know we conceded in the second half, I feel like the game was lost in the first half, the lack of intensity, and we didn’t show many of the things I want from my team, and that hurts.”

Asked how the players responded to his question, Edwards added: “They said they weren’t, they said they’re not. And I was sort of looking in their eyes and stood there and let it linger for about 30 seconds and just go, like, are you? No, was the answer. We saw a response, we were a bit better in the second half, a bit, not a lot, a bit.

“We’re in the position we’re in now, we don’t want to die like that. So that’s probably going to be the message now going forward. We don’t want to go out with a whimper. And that’s just, the first half, that’s how it felt.”

Edwards also stressed that he understands the fans’ frustration at seeing yet another defeat.

“Yeah, I understand. I don’t know when the last time they saw the team win. So I get it. I’d be really angry if I was one of our fans as well at the moment.

“They want to see effort and they want to see passion and fight and determination and grit and endeavour. We didn’t show any of that tonight. So my message to them is I understand.”

Nottingham Forest boss Sean Dyche speaking to Sky Sports: “The hardest fight to win is the one you’re supposed to. They have got pressure on them and you don’t want to be the side to lose to them. Credit to them second half they kept throwing things at us but I’m pleased that we saw it through and got a clean sheet.

“A lot of Omari’s [Hutchinson] work was excellent. I want a lot from our wide players and he worked hard. Igor [Jesus] plays hard and tough, a great header, brave and he doesn’t flinch and gets a deserved goal.

“Ten points in six games, we’re trying to achieve things and they’re doing great. They’ve been listening and tonight is a tricky game, we’ve had to come here and do different things. We were effective first half and we had to dig in in the second half. This is the Premier League and we don’t expect anyone to lie down and they didn’t. We dug in.”

Dyche speaking to BBC MOTD: “These games are really tough. They’re [Wolves] fighting for their lives and everyone is waiting for the one they win. They kept going and throwing things at us. I’m pleased with our mentality. You saw the way we dug it out, they threw a lot at us second half and we dealt with it well.”

Relieved for Igor Jesus to score? “Not relief, they want rewards for their work and he worked hard and stayed strong. He kept his eye on the ball, brilliant cross in and he takes a couple of steps and it’s brave. Tonight it was his night because it’s a big win for us.”

On VAR decision: “He [Dan Ndoye] doesn’t move, he’s just standing there – where do you want him to stand? I don’t think the keeper saves it whether he sees it or not but it’s gone against us. I don’t see the point of it. All the people looking in the VAR studio I don’t know why they have to send the referee to the screen.

“I like VAR it’s valid in the game. It gives more balance. It’s not good for the fans but sometimes as a manager your professional life depends on it. I’m bound to say tonight was wrong because on another night it could’ve cost us but thankfully it didn’t.”

On progression since appointment: “We’ve made some ground up and I’m pleased – they’ve listened, they’ve taken it into their games. I thought we played better on Sunday but we didn’t get the reward, tonight we’ve had to grind it out and I’m pleased with the clean sheet too.”

Dyche said in the press conference: “Tonight, I’m bound to say he doesn’t impede anyone. He doesn’t. He just stands still. He’s not trying to deflect it in or anything like that. I’m bound to say I’m disappointed in it. I don’t think the keeper would have saved it. But you never know, these keepers are so agile. He’s a good keeper as well. So he might have, I’m bound to say that I’m aggrieved.

“Now going on to the fans, that for me, is miles too long. You know, there’s a lot of people sitting in those rooms, and if that decision is the final one, that can be made a lot quicker than that. And then the referee gets put under pressure, which I’m not a fan of. I don’t agree with them going up to the screen. I think usually they turn it around and that takes a long time.

“So I do feel for fans, but the professional side of me says my job might depend on those decisions. So, it’s a tough call. But when it takes that long, I think that’s where I spoke years ago, when it first come in, and it seems like years ago now, and I said it’s how quickly they can speed it up, and it still hasn’t.

“But I don’t understand talking to the crowd, and I just think it’s a waste. It’s already taken forever. Just call it and get on with it. I really don’t understand it. They all wanted it in the Premier League. They tell me, all the stakeholders wanted it. I’d love to know who those stakeholders are, because I speak to the managers, they go, ‘We didn’t want it’. No, I’m serious. I don’t know. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe fans want that, but it just takes more time.

“And the referees, I personally, I think referees have a hard job, and I think they do a great job overall. Why put them under more pressure? You know, it’s not natural for everyone to want to speak in front of 20, 40, 50, 60, 70,000, people. So why put that on their plate as well? Why not just let them officiate. I’m saying take it off them. Give them just a chance to officiate. Give them a chance to breathe and get their job done without layering up more and more and more on top.”

Twitter users reacted after the 5 minute VAR review leaves Sean Dyche riled up while Rob Edwards vents anger at Wolves players…

@trickytrees12: Wolves fans singing f*** VAR after a decision goes in their favour shows you everything you need to know. FIVE minutes to see a clear as day offside is beyond embarrassing for professionals in the supposed best league in the world. Totally killed our momentum too. #nffc

@dannypea: Last night’s deliberating was awful! Five minutes of trying to work out a blatant offside on VAR before sending the Ref to do the doggy work was an embarrassment. It’s killing the game. Can’t remember the last time I’ve enjoyed watching a Premier League game!?

@Ryan_Jonesyy_95: Jesus Christ, the VAR in the Wolves v Nottingham Forest game, absolute joke, he’s offside, clearly obstructed the keeper’s view, and it’s taken about 6 minutes, now he’s gone to the screen, disgrace

@MrR1g4t: The VAR involvement in the #WWFC game tonight is enough to put you off football for life….

@Itismesilly: Not just because of the mess we find ourselves in but football is sadly on it’s arse. That VAR & refereeing performance tonight is enough to turn you to another sport! It is a fucking awful spectacle!! #wwfc

@GaribaldiG1865: Not that it matters now, Jesus got his goal and Forest won, but VAR is a joke. Probably preaching to the converted but 5 mins to chalk off a goal. Either VAR are incompetent or it wasn’t clear and obvious so goal should stand. Killing the game. #NFFC #COYR

@SarcasticForest: Good evening @FA_PGMOL, Forest fan in peace, are you intelligent bastards releasing that VAR decision on blu-Ray?, and will it come with extras like Var room commentary, deleted scenes and outtakes? Thanks in advance #nffc

@alexbe11: 6 minutes to make a straightforward decision. Great process lads

@dj_zotov: How the f*ck can that be clear & obvious to overturn when it took 5 minutes! Joke! 😤 #NFFC
