29 year old Premier League footballer arrested in north London on suspicion of rape

A 29 year old Premier League footballer arrested in north London on suspicion of rape according to reports on Monday evening.

The player, who can’t be named for legal reasons, and is due to play at the World Cup in Qatar in November, was detained from an address in Barnet in the early hours of this morning.

He is currently in custody and is being quizzed over an alleged attack which is said to have taken place last month.

Reports also suggest his club have declined to comment when approached by the various media outlets.

The Met said: “On 4 July, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police.

“It reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022.”

Cops said the man was arrested “at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody where he remains”.

Officers added: “Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”

It is unclear whether the internationally renowned star will now play in his club’s pre-season fixture schedule.

Several Premier League players have been arrested on rape or sexual assault claims in recent years, including the likes of Mason Greenwood and Benjamin Mendy.

Yves Bissouma was arrested back in October on suspicion of sexual assault before being cleared, and in August, an unnamed Everton player was arrested on child sexual offences.

Rape & Sexual Assault Abroad – Returning to the UK

Support for British Nationals Abroad

Rape and sexual assault can happen to women and men of all ages and backgrounds. While most visits abroad are trouble-free, we are becoming more aware of people being sexually assaulted whilst they are overseas.  Sexual assault is a very traumatic experience whenever and wherever it happens, but the trauma can be made even more difficult to deal with when it happens abroad.  We will be as helpful as we can to anyone who tells us they have had sex against their wishes or been attacked by someone wanting sex.
