A young Rotherham supporter ended up being left hurt by an object thrown by Sunderland fans as she was making her way towards town.
The Millers leapfrogged their fellow League One promotion hopefuls with a stunning 5-1 victory in at the New York Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Michael Smith and Freddie Ladapo’s doubles, added with Michael Ihiekwe’s header, sealed Paul Warne’s side the three points over Lee Johnson’s 10 men following Aiden McGeady’s second-half dismissal.
However it would seem there were a number of events that played out inside and outside that ground that has got people talking online.
@ShirtsofNeil wrote in a Twitter post: “Please share the f*ck out of this! Hopefully the decent Sunderland fans out there will know who did this to my mate’s 8 year old girl! She was walking towards town over the bridge where the hot dog stand is! Hope they’re proud of themselves! 😡😡 #safc #rufc”
Please share the f*ck out of this!
Hopefully the decent Sunderland fans out there will know who did this to my mate’s 8 year old girl!

He adds that his wife spoke to the child’s mother and the child has said she is doing ok, however doesn’t want to go back to a football match again.
Rotherham fan @UpTheMillers also added: “Many people were hit by stones and gravel that they were throwing near the players entrance. Police let them do it. Concentrated on moving Rotherham fans instead of stopping the culprits.”
Social media users reacted as a young Rotherham supporter was left hurt by the object thrown by Sunderland fans…
@gatopretosafc: @CWaters_SAFC anything you can do for this young Rotherham fan, perhaps for the return game? Would be such a shame if it put her off attending future games. Not the fault of our club I know, just some mindless so called supporters.
@AmsterDamot: Fu&king hell man, sorry this has happened, hope that she’s ok
@NallNevaeh: How awful, I run a small business and would love to gift scarlett a personalised cup to cheer her up. Can you ask Scarletts parents to drop me a dm xx
@brownh1989: So sorry this has happened. Hope she is ok.
@GH65: This breaks my heart. Hope she’s ok and she gets back to her football
@dwcskyblue: Sorry to hear of Scarlett’s experience, it must have been very upsetting. I hope these messages will assure her that the football family are behind her and it would be a shame if she didn’t go to a match again. 💙
@Wild_Duck163: Bang out of order
@Kevsol: Disgusting that – needs calling out. No need for it.
@JacqsWilliamson: What is wrong with people? We all get caught up in the game but why try hurt others? Hope she’s ok x
@philafx: Poor lass. Absolutely dreadful behaviour.
@AWas29: Hope she’s ok, hopefully no serious damage to the eye? They were an embarrassment today, this shouldn’t be happening because they threw their toys out of the pram. Disgusting. Millimetres from serious damage.
@RobertB68424119: Unfortunately we’ve a section of neanderthals as most clubs do. I hope they’re caught and dealt with. Sorry about your mates girl, decent fans send her best wishes.
@JAMSAFC: This is horrendous. This should of been an amazing memory of her team winning 5-1 and it’s been completely ruined by some scum who aren’t welcome to support our club. Hope they are found and she is doing ok!
@GuzzlerSAFC: Absolutely disgusting. Hope whoever did it sees this, realises badly they fucked up and has the balls to own up to it. Whoever it is has let our club down, shameful
@LavishUk1: Mindless thugs heard of them throwing bricks also at supports on the way out it’s not only the team that a a joke a section of the fans need a good hard look at themselves also hope she’s ok
@Millerscork: From a Dad who brought his 3 kids from Cork to watch the Miller’s today. I think it’s absolutely dispicable, hope you find out which Langer… (Cork slang for idiot) did this and get them banned for life
@MackemLindsey: Oh this is disgusting this, absolute coward behaviour and to a child too. I’m sorry this has happened to her, hope she’s OK!
@Ginty85: Awful to hear. Tell her all of the SAFC fans really hope she doesn’t get put off. I hope the idiot is found out and gets a banning order. It’s such a shame this has spoilt what would have been otherwise a brilliant day out for you all.
@ian_safc_1974: Sorry to hear. Been the same idiots that can barely stand at game drunk and off their heads on coke. Half them barely old enough to drink
@Dave_safc_73: Sorry to hear this but, any of proper fans would never ever do this, unfortunately it will of been one of our arsehole fans, again unfortunately all of our clubs have these arseholes..
@coach_sharon_l: Completely unacceptable…..some of our ‘fans’ are absolute idiots! It hurt today but no need at all for that #HawayTheLads #Sorry
@GreggSAFC: I hope the culprit is found and banned permanently. Don’t want fans like that representing us. I hope she’s okay and I’m so sorry this has happened.
@78_Char_87: Poor kid. Some people who claim to be football fans are vile.
@Mk_mackem: From a father who takes his own daughters to games this is absolutely disgusting. Hate seeing stuff like this from cowards. Hope the little one is alright.
@davidlaing93: I hope she’s ok. Shithouse behaviour, and I promise you that it’s not representative of the whole fan base. Seeing this makes me mad.
@guthers102: It is terrifying what could have happened. I’m so sorry, and I just hope that some decent person will have seen it well enough to provide details so whoever did this doesn’t get away with it. Maybe caught on camera. I am fucking sick of a lot of football fans after the last year.
@AidanMackem: That’s awful to hear hope she’s okay and that the scum who did it gets caught.
What also would have stirred up Sunderland fans even more during matchday was when Michael Smith chose to do the Alan Shearer celebration in front of the travelling supporters.
Rotherham boss Paul Warne post-Sunderland: “I thought we played well today.
“I thought we were really good. I was disappointed with the goal that we conceded because we’re obsessesd with the defenders about letting people inside so that was a big mark against us, but apart from that, I thought we played well.
“Obviously its nice to score that amount of goals at home.
“It was a bit bittersweet for me because I knew Ben Bennett’s memorial was going up on the screen. He was a massive Miller, a massive supporter and a great human being.
“Him and his family are lovely people so I thought it was fitting that we played as well as we did today. It will make me smile when I go to bed tonight.
“We’re trying to be competitive in every game we play in and we try and win every game that we play in.
“We try to have as many goal attempts as we can and sometimes you don’t get your just desserts in the game but today was one of those games where we created a few and were fortunate enough to take five of them.
“It was a really good win against a good Sunderland team, who are well-coached and organised.
“Today was an example of us being at our very best.”
Sunderland boss Lee Johnson: It’s a really poor day for us. It’s a massive opportunity missed.
“It’s three points that we wanted, but I don’t think we showed that anywhere near enough – in the first half, the first 20 minutes, was where it started.
“It was men against boys today, it really was, from start to finish.
“The amount of lazy fouls we made, we looked leggy, we were everywhere the ball has just been – how far do you want me to go with how poor we were?
“It’s really disappointing and I’m hurting badly, the players are hurting badly, and the fans will be hurting badly.
“But it’s three points lost in the big picture of 138 points available.
“We have to learn the lesson but we have already had a couple of those lessons, at Portsmouth and what have you, and we’ve continued with the same pattern so whether now it’s a change of personnel, a change of tactics, additions in January, there’s clearly something we have to snuff out to be more solid at times when we are under the cosh.
“If you are a good team, you are under the cosh for four or five minutes but if you are a bad team – like we were today – then you are going to get runs of attacks for pretty much 70 minutes of the 90, which is what happened.
“Our big losses seem like a catastrophe and a capitulation.
“I’ve managed and played in teams that lose games, but you lose by the odd goal or by a mistake.
“Today was a bad one, and we have to limit these to one or two per season maximum.”
