Wrexham set for friendly against MLS side thanks to Ryan Reynolds and Matthew McConaughey

Wrexham could be set for a Hollywood friendly against MLS side Austin FC thanks to Ryan Reynolds and Matthew McConaughey.

McConaughey is the Minister of Culture at Austin FC, who formed in 2018, and is seemingly good friends with the Welsh outfit’s co-owner.

McConaughey was in the commentary box midway through his side’s 1-1 draw against Colorado on Sunday and revealed that he and Reynolds have been in discussions the idea of a friendly. “I was actually talking to Mr Reynolds today,” he began.

“We’re going to work up, maybe, a little friendly with his team.” That prompted excitement from the rest of the commentary box as one person said: “A little Wrexham Austin? He’d be all over that!”

It didn’t take long for it to catch the attention of Wrexham fans with one writing: “This would be a party.” And another said wrote: “Would be up for this! Imagine an away day in @AustinFC! Wow.”

Reynolds and Ryan McElhenney made headlines around the world after buying Wrexham in February last year and have turned the club into title favourites in the National League and grown the club’s fanbase thanks to a Disney+ documentary.

Wrexham currently sit second behind Notts County, winning nine, drawing two and losing two of their opening 13 games.

Phil Parkinson’s side got many talking at the weekend following a 12-goal thriller on Saturday, eventually coming out on top 7-5 at home to Barnet.

The club have also just passed 1,000,000 combined followers across our social media channels, as interest grows worldwide.

They said via their website: “With interest in the Welcome to Wrexham series boosting our social media following, the Club has gained more than 200,000 followers in the six weeks since August 30, 2022.

“Interest in the Club was already spiralling upwards too, with now more than 620,000 new followers across our main social media channels – TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube – since March 1, 2022.

“The Club is now asking all new fans to remember to sign-up to our mailing list, so that you can stay in touch with the Club and also find out how and when you will be able to stream our matches worldwide. Just click the link below and add your name to our mailing list.”

Austin FC is an American professional soccer club based in Austin, Texas and competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference.

Founded in 2018, the club began play in the 2021 season and their home stadium is Q2 Stadium in north Austin, with a capacity of 20,738 and get on average the same figure.

They are the first major professional sports league team to play in Texas’ capital, which prior to 2021 was the largest city in the United States without such a team.

It’s been confirmed that ESPN2 will be airing Wrexham AFC’s FA Cup qualifier match with Blyth Spartans on Saturday morning, which begins at 8 AM ET. Strengthening the fanbase overseas.

In the summer of last year, Wrexham had planned to head to the United States for a preseason friendly against Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union.

But they had to call off their pre-season US Tour, meaning Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ dream of bringing their team to play a game on US soil was postponed.

This was a hard decision for everyone involved especially having already planned an infinite amount of hours spent on this event. In the end, it came down to safety. The press release from Wrexham AFC explains:

It is with significant regret that the Club has taken the decision not to travel to the United States for the game with the Philadelphia Union on July 29, 2021.

The Club have received significant assistance from both the Welsh Government and US Embassy to ensure the complex immigration requirements on both sides of the Atlantic could be satisfied, for which we were exceptionally grateful.

However, the increased risks and continued uncertainty created by COVID-19 have led the Club to make this decision, so as not to expose the players and staff to unnecessary risks that could have a negative impact on preparations for the new season.

We realise that this decision will be disappointing to fans of the Club, as well as those commercial partners who agreed to support the tour, and we apologise to all this decision affects.

Finally, to our new friends at the Philadelphia Union, we do hope to bring this game to fruition at some stage in the next 12 months and we wish you every success for the future.

Maybe they might end up playing them along with Austin in 2022.
