WREXHAM STATEMENT:
The Soccer Tournament, the $1 million, winner-take-all, 7v7 world championship, today announced the acceptance of Wrexham AFC in their 32-team field. Wrexham, who is coming to the United States for the first time in Club history to compete in TST, will be a part of the inaugural 32-team event in Cary, NC from June 1-4, 2023.
Wrexham becomes the ninth publicly announced team in TST’s 32-team field, joining former U.S. Men’s National Team star Clint Dempsey’s Team Dempsey, popular British football and esports club Hashtag United, historic Liga MX side Club Necaxa, and US Women, a group of former United States Women’s National Team players organized by Heather O’Reilly, among others.
Wrexham’s TST team will feature club legends, including personalities seen in Welcome to Wrexham. Official commitments for Wrexham’s TST team will be announced through TST’s social media channels, @TST7V7, as well as the club’s.
“We look forward to debuting in the US with a legends team and the ambition of winning the tournament,” said Shaun Harvey, Advisor to the Board at Wrexham AFC. “Should we be successful, $500,000 of the prize money will be used to enhance the Club’s work in the local community. Wrexham AFC is more than just a first team. It represents the people of North Wales and this tournament will allow us to incorporate former players of the club like we have never been able to do before.”
Formed in 1864, Wrexham is the oldest club in Welsh football history, and the third oldest football club in the world. Well decorated in its 159 year history, Wrexham has won 23 Welsh Cups, the most of any team in Wales.
Wrexham currently sits in first place of the National League, the fifth tier in the English football league, with potential promotion into EFL League Two on the horizon. They’re also the only non-league side remaining in the Round of 32 of the FA Cup, whose original field began with 732 teams.
Wrexham was brought to prominence in the United States following the purchase of the club by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020, and the unveiling of their plans to launch a television series documenting the team and community. Welcome to Wrexham has garnered rave reviews after airing its first season in 2022, and the club saw a massive increase in its social media following and merchandise sales.
“Wrexham AFC is an incredible story showcasing the experience that can unfold when fans, players and owners are equally committed to the Club and the community,” said TST founder & CEO Jon Mugar. “We are proud to welcome the entire Wrexham AFC family to the US and TST to watch the Club compete in our electrifying format.”
Featuring an unprecedented, million dollar, winner-take-all prize, TST has become the defining world championship for 7v7 soccer, attracting the most competitive soccer players in the world to an annual, highly intense format that follows the World Cup structure, pinning 32 teams against each other in group play before moving into the knockout stages. All but one slot in the tournament is filled. The final slot will be auctioned off in March.
