Wolves players restrained by staff and fans vent anger after Ipswich score 94th minute winner

Several Wolves players had to be restrained by staff and fans took to vent anger after Ipswich score a vital 94th minute winner.

Gary O’Neil’s side looked to have salvaged a point when Matheus Cunha cancelled out a Matt Doherty own goal but a failure to defend a late set-piece proved costly for Wolves saw Jack Taylor head home on 94 minutes.

Rayan Ait-Nouri was handed a second yellow card for his involvement in what happened after the game.

BBC Sport said on the fill time scenes via their live text service: “Some unsavoury scenes on the pitch at the end of this one as Rayan Ait-Nouri needs to be held back by some of the Wolves coaching staff. Not sure what sparked that but he certainly wasn’t happy.”

Sky Sports meanwhile said: “For the second game running Wolves players are kicking off at the full-time whistle. Cunha looks agitated and then Ait-Nouri clashes with Burns and has to be dragged away by teammate Craig Dawson, who ushers him down the tunnel. O’Neil is on the pitch having a word with the referee about the winning goal. A hint of offside maybe but he’s clutching at straws there. Lots for referee Simon Hooper to sort out there.”

talkSPORT said: “Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha BOTH had to be held back by staff after Wolves’ 2-1 loss to Ipswich. Unsavoury scenes at the Molineux, with this scuffle coming just one week after Mario Lemina clashed with his teammates and coaching staff too.”

Manny Singh Kang tweeted: “Sa going into Southbank, Mario pushing everyone at West Ham, now RAN. This is the definition of a squad with no togetherness. Under a good manager you only do that once and never again. Shambles.”

Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle speaking to Premier League Productions: “I can stand here and say we deserved more but we have some issues we have got to sort out. It has to be improved and we will give 110 per cent but it has to be better than that.

“The be all and end all is that we are not winning football matches. It is difficult for me to stand here and put a finger on it. Hopefully tonight the fans will see the effort was there. It has to be better and we understand that. But yeah, it is another defeat which is not good enough and we apologise to the fans for that.

“The dressing room is a difficult place to be at this moment in time. We have to be honest with each other and figure out ourselves why we aren’t getting three points. Honest conversations need to happen. Our mood is reflected by if we win or not and when we aren’t doing that it is difficult. We have got to be a lot better. A lot better.

“I want the fans to know that we will give 100 per cent every single day to try and put this right for them.”

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil speaking to Match of the Day: “It is a big blow for the group. Especially with how we fought to get back into the game and be the better side for the second half, We were at maximum and felt like we would go on and win the game. To suffer that goal so late, the nature of the goal is crazy, which we have said already.

“I can shield them from so much but long balls over the top and then players are taking it upon themselves to change positions from a corner, for some reason. The subs made a big impact and we fought back and we have nothing to show for it.”

On Ipswich’s winner: “I was told that it might have been offside. We have had a couple. There are far more pressing matters in my mind than VAR and whether the guy was in the way. Too many mistakes from us again. These cannot happen at these levels. We have no chance if we can’t deal with Liam Delap running through. We have no chance if we can’t stand in the right place and head the ball. It is a more than disappointing way to lose. We take nothing from it.”

What is the most pressing matter? “The team. The ability of the team to cope at this level. I have worked at this level for, this is my third year now and I have never had such a struggle to help the group cope with being at this level. We go to Everton and they boot it up the pitch and we can’t cope. We have to find answers within the room to find answers. That second-half performance was us at maximum and them not really threatening. But we still found a way to concede two.”

“That is the group performing at maximum today. Until we can defend our goal then we are going to struggle. The emotion affects a lot. We started the game well and then Ipswich scored a goal they will never score against another Premier League team. I saw Delap doing that at youth level bashing people out of the way and it can’t happen at this level. I will take the set-piece goal as my fault, if people are stood in the right place, but they weren’t.”

On Rayan Ait-Nouri’s red card: “I haven’t seen it. I have just been told he received a second yellow. I spoke to him during the game. We are under a lot of pressure. We are trying to push the group beyond our level and you can’t get yourself in trouble. We are stretched as it is. We need Rayan and now we don’t have him. I will deal with that internally. I understand the players being emotional but we have to keep control better. For two players not to be in the right place for a corner, at home to Ipswich, in the last seconds, shows they are not able to think clearly enough in those moments.”

Ipswich Town matchwinner Jack Taylor: “We played really well in the first half and then they came back into it. I am really happy to have got the winning touch.

“I was told to come on and try and impact the game and try and calm the game down because it was a little but hectic. I have a little knack for goals so I am glad to have got that one today.

“We normally take each game as it comes but getting the win today I would like to take momentum into the next one.”

How will you celebrate this win? “It is a long journey back with the lads so we will have a good time. I will be watching my goal back many times!”

Here’s what Twitter users said with Wolves players restrained by staff and fans vent anger after Ipswich score a 94th minute winner…

@Dome81wolf: Not good enough, how many set pieces do we have to concede…. There was 30 thousand in the stadium seeing that going in, before the corner was taken.

@kevtheman10: After Cunha got the equaliser, they wasted so many chances. In injury time Ipswich score the winner and the defence were shocking against another goal involving a setpiece. 🤦‍♂️ With the matches that are coming up, i can’t see where a win will come for Wolves.🐺#WWFC #WOLIPS

@SpeesrA: So much for your positivity! We’re heading to the championship.

@MrRyanLeister: #wwfc | @Fosun_Intl. The worst run club in the Premier League & by some distance. Cutting corners at every opportunity other than where fan loyalty is been exploited. The misplaced arrogance from the Fosun steward is staggering & although @Wolves have many problems, the man at the top is the biggest issue as without his GestiFute safety blanket he’s completely lost. I’m not expecting Fosun to pump endless amounts of money in, but as the custodians of our football club you have a duty of care which they are no longer fulfilling to the required standard. Step up or let someone who is fully invested take over.

@Topoftheshop40: Players are embarrassing. Santi Bueno defending like that from a corner, Ait Nouri the way he played all game. A joke. And so many more, Guedes and Doyle the only ones who actually put their all out there and didn’t even start. Embarrassing

@Dwarfio: You reap what you sow and Fosun have got lucky in last two seasons… they’ll need more than a fortune cookie to get out this almighty, self-inflicted mess #wwfc

@spottywolf: Sack your set piece coach and keep conceding the same goals from set pieces since. GON that is down to you and you’re coaching #wwfc #getoutnow

@Limaprop: I feel 100 different negative emotions, and I have only been a fan for 5 years. I can’t begin to fathom how lifelong supporters of the club feel. Fans, specifically local lifelong fans, are the soul of a football club. And fosun are really destroying the soul of this club. #wwfc

@MattallicaWolf: Ran out of effort to try and give a valid balanced point, FOSUN cuckolds and “look how far we have come” FC supporters can fuck off. Rotten from top to bottom and it ain’t stopping yet, strap yourselves in as it’s going to get nasty…maybe it’s needed #wwfc

@adpr84: #wwfc a disgrace from top to bottom at the moment. More fights on the pitch than wins. GON has lost all control. Finally the Fosun Out chants have started and need to be ramped up. There is genuine prospect of another double dip relegation on the cards 🫠

@SomeBritishDud1: There is absolutely no standard of football whatsoever under GON. The tactics seem to be pass it about and hope one of the flair players does something. That’s how you play football in non-league not the fucking Premier League. GON, Shi, Fosun, they can all fuck off. #wwfc

@Joshcox_wwfc: The clubs a fucking mess. It’s embarrassing. One good thing is hopefully the day trippers will fuck off next season. Sold our soul and outpriced loyal supporters. The Chinese mafia.
