The 2017-18 season was the first to include six teams in the playoffs for each division, with the 4th-7th placed teams participating in the qualifying round and the 2nd and 3rd placed teams qualifying for the semi-finals.

Wrexham, Aldershot Town and Grimsby Town have all featured in those playoffs four times, more than all the the others.

Wrexham were in them following a fourth place finish in the 2010/11 season, however lost to Luton Town 5-1 on aggregate.

They then featured again in the 2011/12, finishing in second place, but lost 3-2 on aggregate to Luton Town in the semis.

The Welsh outfit finished 5th in the 2012/13 season, then faced Kidderminster in the playoff semi finals, which they won both legs (5-2 agg), however came up against Newport County, and it was the Exiles that came out 2-0 winners.

2018/19 season was the last time Wrexham have been in those playoffs, but it was the first which included a quarter final, and that’s as far they got, losing 1-0 after extra time against Eastleigh.

For Aldershot, they were first in those playoff places back in the 2003/04 season, and they ended up getting to the final having beaten Hereford on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate, and it was spot kicks that saw the Shots knocked out by Shrewsbury Town in the final at Stoke City.

Thye returned in them for the following year (2004/05), though were knocked out by eventual winners Carlisle after losing on penalties.

It was a while before they were back in them, with the next time being the 2016/17 season, again, they fell at the first hurdle, losing 5-2 on aggregate to Tranmere in the semis.

The last time they featured in them was the 2017/18 season, however they couldn’t get past the quarter final, losing 5-4 on aggregate to Ebbsfleet.

Grimsby Town have also been in the playoffs four times, and all of them in a row between the 2012/13 and 2015/16 seasons.

Newport County won 2-0 on aggregate in the semi finals back in 2013, before the Mariners also suffering another semi final defeat to Gateshead (4-2 agg, 2014),

They did however to the final the next two seasons that followed. 2015 saw them win 5-1 agg against Eastleigh in the semis but lost 5-3 on pens following a 1-1- draw to Bristol Rovers, and then managed to finally get promoted with a 3-1 win over Forest Green in 2016, after beating Braintree 2-1 in the semis.
