West Ham’s Nikola Vlasic in tears following Ashley Westwood’s horror injury

West Ham’s Nikola Vlasic was seen in tears following Ashley Westwood’s horror injury which stopped the Premier League match for 10 minutes.

Nikola Vlasic was consoled by his fellow teammates when the Clarets midfielder’s ankle appeared to be fully rotated as he received medical attention.

Westwood was down and in a lot of pain with immediate medical attention required after a tackle with Vlasic who looks devastated before Declan Rice consoled him.

Jeremy Langdon at the London Stadium said: “It looks a very serious injury.

“Westwood is surrounded by medical personnel.

“A number of players have given the impression they know how serious the injury is.

“Vlasic was immediately upset, his head was in his hands, and Westwood immediately signalled to the bench.

“Aaron Cresswell and others looked upset, too.”

Ian Dennis, BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter: “Straight away Ashley Westwood’s reaction was this doesn’t look good. Looks like right lower leg and a really bad injury.

“The good thing is the physios are here straight away. Vlasic is close to tears, Cresswell turned away. It really doesn’t look good.”

Ray Houghton (Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland midfielder): “Sometimes the most innocuous challenges can turn out to be the biggest injuries. If I was the managers, I’d be getting the players away from Westwood; let the medical teams deal with it. The doctors are there, the physios are there. He’s getting on a stretcher; I’m sure he’ll go to hospital and get checked over.”

A huge round of applause for Westwood as he was stretchered off on the back of a medical cart. The midfielder is in tears as he is taken down the tunnel. Brownhill replaced him.

Whilst they were dealing with that, there then appeared to be a medical emergency in the crowd as West Ham fans urge for attention in the stand.

The game was then stopped again after fans call for medical attention behind the West Ham goal.

Minutes later, they were back underway and Burnley won a corner.

Cornet sent it in and the ball found Rodriguez who headed it against the bar and Weghorst was there to head home the rebound.

Very muted celebrations from the away side following the injury to Westwood, who had been stretchered off just three minutes earlier.

A penalty was then given to Burnley! Cornet, who was released by a long ball by Brownhill, then brought down by Fabianski when one-on-one. The goalkeeper was booked for the challenge.

Cornet stepped up and misses. A poor penalty from the Ivorian who put his spot-kick wide of the right post.

Ray Houghton: “The players are thinking about Ashley Westwood. It is never nice to see a team-mate with a bad injury, but they’ve got to be professional. They are 1-0 up; could easily be 2-0. West Ham haven’t been as good as they have been this season.”

Understandable, how much has Thursday taken out of their legs? They are still a threat from set pieces.

Set pieces came to the rescue for the Hammers in the 74th minute. Lanzini curled in a fantastic ball into the middle and Soucek, amazingly, was unmarked to steer home from close range.
