West Ham have sacked Nuno Espírito Santo with immediate effect, with Scott Parker leading the next-manager betting as the club searches for someone to revive its promotion push.
The announcement on Tuesday 3 November follows Saturday’s 3–1 home defeat by West Bromwich Albion, which left the Hammers eighth in the Championship after 13 matches. Recruitment is already underway, but West Ham have not confirmed a successor.
What West Ham said
In their official statement, West Ham said the board had reviewed the start to the Championship season and believed a change was needed to keep the club’s objectives and expectations on track.
The club thanked the departing coaches and added: “The process of recruiting a new Head Coach is already underway.” West Ham will make no further comment until an appointment is confirmed.
Was the decision justified?
The immediate concern is clear: back-to-back home defeats have interrupted the push for an immediate Premier League return. In the club’s report after West Brom, Nuno acknowledged a poor performance and the need for rapid improvement. Eighth after 13 games is below the promotion objective, even with much of the season remaining.
There is also a case for patience. In a 4 June interview, West Ham highlighted 25 points from the final 17 games of the previous Premier League season, despite relegation. The same report recalled Nuno’s Championship title with Wolves, secured with 99 points in 2017/18. His record includes experience of winning this division.
Our view: the recent results explain the pressure, but changing coach does not guarantee promotion. The board must now find someone who improves this squad quickly. With 33 league fixtures still to play, there is time to recover; the quality of the replacement will determine whether this intervention helps.
Who could replace Nuno?
BBC Sport reported on Tuesday morning that West Ham are in advanced talks with Scott Parker. The former Hammers midfielder has managed Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley. That is a significant reported development, but the club has yet to announce an appointment.
West Ham Zone’s 2 November report, citing Alan Nixon, linked Scott Parker, Rob Edwards and Kieran McKenna, reporting checks on Parker. Those are reported links, rather than an official shortlist.
Parker is also the shortest-priced candidate in the Oddschecker comparison checked this morning. Thomas Frank features in the market too; a betting price alone does not establish contact with the club.
Reaction to the official announcement
Replies beneath West Ham’s official statement post showed different views on the decision.
Dan Woffenden (@danwoff98) backed the change but stressed the next appointment:
Right decision. Now please get the replacement right.
Drew (@KaiserBCFC_) questioned the turnover:
How many managers have they driven out now?
henry_883 (@odell_ode93629) opposed the sacking, arguing that a good run could transform the campaign. These individual replies reflect a split in opinion, rather than a poll of the fanbase.
Attention now turns to Cardiff. Noble, Potts and Prenderville will oversee preparations while the board works on its next appointment.
