West Brom on the wind up with cheeky chants and Twitter post after beating Wrexham

West Brom fans were on the wind up with a number of cheeky chants and a Twitter post after watching their side beat Wrexham on Saturday.

Wrexham’s Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were in attendance, only to see their team lose 3-2 for the club’s first home game back in the Championship since 1982.

Isaac Price opened the scoring in the 20th minute, but O’Brien levelled for Wrexham before the break. Jed Wallace restored West Brom’s lead, and Price added a second goal in the 81st.

Sam Smith’s 95th-minute header set up a tense finish, but West Brom held on for all three points. Wrexham also saw Josh Windass suffer a hamstring injury.

There were chants from a packed out away end of “Deadpool, give us a wave, Deadpool, Deadpool give us a wave!” along with “You’re only here to see the Albion”.

West Brom also stuck up a graphic with Hollywood style sign ‘Up the Albion’ posted on Twitter following on from their win.

Their chairman wrote after the game: “Well done by the lads! Traveling support was immense as well, bringing all the atmosphere! We keep writing our story…”

The result leaves West Brom 3rd with 2 wins from 2 while Wrexham are 19th with 0 points from their opening 2 games at this very early stage of the season.

West Brom boss Ryan Mason said, per the club website: “That was really positive and I’m really happy. I thought we deserved it. It was a really good performance away from home.

“We understand how difficult it is to win away from home in this league. Obviously last season the club went a long time without winning away and it’s not okay for a club of this size to do that. It was nice to win that first home game and it’s great to win our first away game.

“We have to stay humble, keep working and keep pushing.

“There was a real togetherness today. We had to deal with balls into our box, long balls and second balls. We really earned the right to influence the game from our side of things and we’ll need that going forward.

“We understood the challenge and there was lots of energy inside the stadium, but we imposed our style relatively early on in the game. We definitely deserved the win in my opinion.

“We’re obviously disappointed to have conceded two goals but that’s not going to impact the feeling of us winning a game of football away from home – something we haven’t done for such a long time.

“It was obviously 1-1 heading into the final stages and it’s really pleasing when you make changes and a goal arrives almost instantly. We’re all delighted for the goalscorers today, Jed Wallace and Isaac Price.

“It’s great when the subs can impact the game and help you win. We know we’re going to need everyone in the squad to help us get results.

“We’re so pleased to give the supporters that result today. We felt their support in the stands. They were absolutely amazing and our target is to give them many more away days like that one throughout the term.”

Wrexham’s Phil Parkinson said, per Wrexham Leader

“I think between both boxes we were decent, we showed good control in our play with and without the ball.

“Tactically we were fine, the lads took everything on board.

“But the game is won and lost in both boxes ultimately and the goals we conceded were too soft, it’s as simple as that.

“We’ve got to find a tenacity and defend our box better.

“The chances we had, could we have made the keeper work more? Yes of course, but the goals were just too soft.

“We’ve had starts to seasons like this before; in League Two I remember where we were doing a lot of good things like defending properly, and we’ve got to get that grittiness back in our game.

“If you look at us over the years, we’ve been a tough team to play against and we’ve done the basics well, and had that platform to go and win games of football.

“That was the reverse of that today. A lot of the football was really good and we showed that we can compete at the level.

“But I didn’t see too many times our players were getting freedom and space in their penalty box.

“We’ve got to look at that, and we will do, starting on Monday morning.

“The lads we’ve brought in at the moment are really good and I’m pleased with the way they’ve settled in.

“We probably do need a couple more players and we’re looking at that.

“It’s ongoing, it’s obviously busy for all managers and clubs at the moment when you’re preparing for games and looking to improve the squad.”
