West Brom fans vent fury at players after 2-1 defeat to Oxford makes it winless in 11 league games

West Brom fans vent their fury at the players after a 2-1 defeat to Oxford United makes it winless in 11 league games.

Pressure as intensified for the Baggies as they handed fellow strugglers Oxford, their first victory in seven Championship matches to see them close the gab to just three points off West Brom and two off 22nd-placed Leicester.

Stanley Mills had the U’s ahead when he netted from Jamie Donley’s corner, then Will Lankshear did the same for a free kick floated in by Cameron Brannagan to make it 2-0 on 26 minutes.

West Brom got one back through substitute Oliver Bostock when a shot from the edge of the box was deflected into the net to reduce the hosts’ lead.

Krystian Bielik somehow failed to make it 2-2 with six minutes to go, seeing his headed effort from Alex Mowatt’s free kick wide, with Oxford holding on for a massive win.

Morrison, per Sky Sports:

“We have to get real. I do feel let down by them.

“Maybe we’re not as good as we think we are – maybe that’s why we are where we are. You get what you deserve.

“We gave them two goals. I understand the criticism from our fans – they have every right to have a go at us, they’re passionate about this club.

“The game started OK, we were putting pressure on them, and then the story of the season – we give them two goals.

“We said beforehand that set plays are big for them, but we just let it happen so that was very disappointing – and the manner of them.

“For the first one we had a throw-in, easily lost possession and we gave it away – that was the first corner. Defending that set play, my big centre half – where is he? It’s in his zone, go and head it.

“The second one we give away a free-kick, and what happens, the ball in the box, the goalkeeper doesn’t come to collect it, in the six-yard box – what chance have you got in a big game like this?

“I’m hurting inside – the manner of it, how big a game it was and to not have the personality around the box. We brought on an 18-year-old and he was the one who did the most damage.

“Maybe we’ve got to put out the biggest side we can put out and play for set plays – I don’t see any other way.

“I didn’t feel any threat in general play, it was just their threat from set plays.”

West Bromwich Albion interim head coach James Morrison told BBC WM:

“It’s not acceptable.

“I thought we started the game on top in the first 15 minutes, but we knew what game plan was going to come and we didn’t deal with it.

“They’ve got to take responsibility for that – two balls in the box, two goals in the first 30 minutes. How are you supposed to have a chance of winning a game away from home?

“Then when we were around the box we weren’t creative enough, weren’t brave enough. It’s deeply disappointing.”

Oxford United head coach Matt Bloomfield told BBC Radio Oxford:

“It’s really important that we got that first home win.

“It’s really important that we give our supporters something to cheer about, be proud of their team about and something that we can really get our teeth stuck into.

“Today did feel like a big day, it was only three points, but it felt like it was a big day for us and I’m so proud to be stood here as the winning manager.

“If you look at last season the survival was built on set-piece goals and we need to do better at that – we need to do better at goals in general. But set-pieces are a great threat for us, so really pleased that we got two from that today.”

Bloomfield, per Sky Sports:

“I think it’s just a big relief.

“We wanted to get the first win (under me) at home, we wanted to get our first goals at home, and share a moment with our supporters and give them a lift with a league result that really puts us back in touch.

“The six minutes of stoppage time felt like a long time, and then they found another 20 seconds.

“All week I have been playing down the importance of this game. We just need to keep playing the games the way we want to play them – and be spot on tactically.

“It’s just one result, and we want to be hungry for more. We hope it’s a springboard for more.

“To get two goals ahead and then concede one, it was never going to be a comfortable second half.

“It felt the energy had come out a bit and what our substitutions enabled us to do was play a bit higher up the pitch. We showed our true character in that second half.”

Social media users reacted as West Brom fans vent fury at players after a 2-1 defeat to Oxford makes it winless in 11 league games…

@connor4real1: Poor Bostock man. He don’t deserve to face that. These senior “pros” are evenletting the young lads in our squad down.

@jackutfa: Really hope Bostock knows the chants don’t involve him

@blackers_wba: Some happy clappers had a go at me for booing at the end . Soon told them to fuck off . I pay my money and will sing or boo what I want

@talkwba: The worst Albion side i’ve ever seen by the way. Genuinely ashamed of these lads and this club

@shappers1985: Charlie Taylor, Jed Wallace, Isaac Price and Kristian Bielek. All beyond terrible today. Shouldn’t be near the first XI next game. I’d rather play 18 year olds from the youth team.

@tomoFoot: But but the players are happy now because mozza is in charge and training with a smile on there face’s #wba

@bedders221: Give me Strodder & Dobbins over Bielik & Taylor any day of the week. Even tho Strodder’s 60 & Dobbins 57. And btw how the fcuk is Ian Pearce still in a job??? Robbing a living. Recruitment has clearly been appalling for years. Prepare for attendances of 10k in Lge 1 next season.

@GeorgeHogg93: Planning permission for new stadium all but signed. Three massive points to boost our staying up bid. First goals in 2026 at home. Not a bad few days, eh? Just need to put together a string of wins now. 11 to go. You beautiful bastards! This is just beautiful to watch. Bloody love Jack Currie, goodnight 💙💛 #oufc

@ConCowan9: Given ourselves an opportunity of a lifetime with that result. Do not. Let this. Slip. #oufc

@JustCarty: Weekend got even better, cheers lads #wwfc

@gabrielbeech5: WBA Leicester and Blackburn are all clubs full of toxicity and anger. We need to stick together and be united like today there will be plenty more ups and downs for the rest of the season so we need to be behind the players every step up of the way. #OUFC
