There was a lower than usual turnout as West Brom fans lose patience with Ryan Mason after a bore draw with Sheffield Wednesday.
Jonny Drury talks of how West Brom fans have voiced frustration over the team’s lack of attacking flair and entertainment, boos were heard at half time and full time.
The atmosphere was subdued, empty seats aplenty due to the recent dull performances, also not helped by the the unpopular 12:30 Sky kick-off, with a sense that supporters are voting with their feet concerns about Albion’s current style.
If results don’t improve, pressure will continued to increase on Mason, with the Baggies now sitting 10th in the Championship, winning just five of their 13 fixtures so far.

I know it’s all a bit doom and gloom at the club right now, but the atmosphere within the stadium stinks, we need to do our part to get behind the lads.
We need to be up for it. #wba pic.twitter.com/Ybks2480mO

West Brom’s Ryan Mason:
“We need to anticipate and be as optimistic as possible in the final third. There were a couple of situations where their keeper made a save and the ball fell and it was there for the taking.
“So we need to work to get inside the minds and bodies of the group to sniff out chances. But we know of the work we need to do and it’s a team effort.
“We came to win and so we’re disappointed. I thought we started well and we had a few good moments, but the longer it stays 0-0 the more anxiety there was.”
West Brom manager Ryan Mason speaking to BBC Radio WM:
“It was disappointing not to win. The performance in the second half was a little disjointed. We rushed things and played a little bit on edge. Tough to accept.
“The first half for 25 minutes, I thought we played a really good game. We had loads of final third entries, loads of moments.
“I understand the first goal is crucial and the longer the game was 0-0 there was probably a bit of anxiety.
“The energy shifted and we need to learn from that and be disciplined and do what we need to for 95 minutes.
“Every game in this league is demanding and challenging; we had so many moments that didn’t materialise and we need to improve on that.”
Sheffield Wednesday’s Henrik Pedersen, per Sky Sports:
“To feel this atmosphere from the fans, it’s been a great week.
“This togetherness is a good pointer towards the future. We have a fantastic club and have been in a difficult situation – and still are – but the perspective now is that the future is brighter. The way the fans, players and staff are pulling together right now is amazing.
“I’m really proud of the performance. The theme of this week has been to be the player you want to be and who you do not want to be.
“Also how we can keep ourselves at a high level for 90 minutes, because the tendency is we can compete but not for 90 minutes. This is the first time we have been at it mentally for 90 minutes.”
Pedersen speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield:
“I am very satisfied. We have spoken a lot this week about who we want to be across 95 minutes and who we don’t want to be.
“From the first moment today, we had a difficult beginning, we played a strong first half. It is a difficult place to play and a strong opponent.
“It is the first time I felt we were where we want to be defensively over 95 minutes. There are things to work on offensively we want to work on.
“Sean [Fusire] was fantastic today, how he always jumped and won his duels. They started to play behind him but he won all his running duels and was calm on the ball. Harry [Amass] had a really strong beginning, big respect to him.”
Here’s what Twitter users were saying as West Brom fans lose patience with Ryan Mason after bore draw with Sheffield Wednesday…
@ftbl_mouraa: Easy to put it on the manager but these players are fucking dross. Awful performance from many of them out there
@JamesHamiltonGK: You have to start questioning Mason’s coaching experience at spurs under Jose , Poch Conte etc . What was he doing just putting out the cones out ? The formation cause Wednesday no trouble should have changed it sooner and what is the point put in Dike on after 90 minutes?
@Geordiebaggie: Mason hasn’t got a clue. Anyone who couldn’t see it weeks ago was a bit crazy. Useless.
@JRH0lmes: Sack him now, he’s clueless. No identity, no ideas. Clearly out of his depth. Another pathetic ‘effort’. We are such a poorly coached team.
@22Baggie99: I’ve defended the gaffer as the league position didn’t look too bad before & it’s not all his fault but that right there is indefendible & serious questions need to be asked & he needs to take some responsibility now & stop persisting with this boring style & same catch phrases
@duckett_harry: Sack him, we’re now in November and we still don’t know what his style of play is. Good be a good manager one day but we’re not the club to allow him to do his learning, too much expectation here
@lukemills94: Toothless. Johnston the only one with an ounce of creativity
@David1001B: What a fucking poor excuse of a football team. It’s no good pursuing financial stability or considerate stewardship if no fucker has a shot on target every single week!
@jud3yxwbaa: Time to accept the fact that mason is wayyyyy out of his depth there is no backing that game and his decisions 0-0 at home to bottom of the league and you bring two defenders on. I’m sorry but that’s it for me
@JamesHamiltonGK: Not sure if it’s fitness-related, but lately we go from unlikely to score to impossible after 60 minutes. After the hour mark, I had no belief we’d score — and it’s not the first time
@JonW1995:
Result: Terrible
Performance: Terrible
Atmosphere: Terrible
There’s just nothing going right at the moment
@ESkelding: I’m trying to give Mason time but I’m starting to give up the hope, no style of play, no intent, just boring useful football
@JJC2653: Respectfully should be doing better against a side like Wednesday, still early in season so I’m not reacting but Mason needs to do/be better as he seems to have no other plans in his approach to the games. Players need to step up as well asap
@patrickspillane: Mason booed by the smethwick – time to go
