West Brom ‘bitterly disappointed’ as dramatic 93rd minute own goal rescues point for Leicester

West Brom were left ‘bitterly disappointed’ as a dramatic 93rd minute own goal rescues a point for Leicester.

Aston Villa loanee Samuel Iling-Junior, on his full debut, put the Baggies ahead with a magnificent solo goal after 10 minutes.

However, Josh Maja produced an astonishing miss from inside the six-yard box. Then dramatically in stoppage time, Bobby Decordova-Reid’s shot came back off Phillips’ shin and went in the back of the net to leave the majority inside The Hawthorns frustrated.

The 1-1 draw means going into the rest of the weekend’s fixtures, West Brom and Leicester missing on the chance to go second in the Championship.

Middlesbrough lead by four points with a game in hand. Leicester’s five-game unbeaten run goes on, but their six-match winning streak at West Brom’s Hawthorns has come to an end.

West Brom are back in the play-off spots temporarily. The Championship’s intense nine-point week could potentially change things up by next weekend.

West Brom head coach Ryan Mason speaking to Sky Sports: “I thought we played a really good game and in the second half, we created some really good chances. But that’s football. If you don’t kill the game, you don’t take the opportunities you earn, 1-0 is a dangerous scoreline.

“It’s the second home game in a row we’ve only conceded one shot on target and we’ve come away with one point, so I’m bitterly disappointed. I thought the performance deserved so much more.

“It’s not about individuals, it’s more about a collective mindset to be killers. As a team, we need to punish them; we need to kill the game off. We created enough chances and enough moments.

“The nature in which the goal goes in is disappointing as well because it’s not something where they’ve opened us up. It’s something we have to accept, we have to move on from, we have to improve on a lot.”

Leicester manager Marti Cifuentes speaking to Sky Sports: “It’s a game with different moments for both teams. I definitely felt we had a very strong first half and unfortunately we were chasing a result. We need to be better in the last third, on putting that dominance into chances, into goals, but I still felt the team did a lot of good things.

“In the second half, the closer we got to the end, the more we chased the result, the more emotional it was. In an open situation, at the end, we were chasing what we wanted, to get at least one point from this game.

“There is plenty of quality in the squad, it is just that we are building something and it sometimes takes time to play against good teams as well and credit to West Brom, they defended really well.”

Leicester midfielder Harry Winks told Sky Sports: “We’d probably take (a point) after the performance, but we have a lot to improve on.

“The lads off the beech helped us massively to rescue a point. Everyone together is the most important thing. when I play I try to bring as much as I can to the team. Hopefully we can get some wins.”

Leicester’s Bobby De Cordova-Reid, who teed-up the equaliser, told Sky Sports: “I just tried to make an impact, I did that. We’re disappointed with a point but credit to the lads we never gave up and got what we deserved in the end.

“Considering how we started, they got a goal against the run of play and they had something to hold onto, so I suppose it’s a decent point, but we can be belter, we’ll get back to the drawing board.”

Here’s how fans reacted with West Brom ‘bitterly disappointed’ as a dramatic 93rd minute own goal rescues a point for Leicester…

@patrick56623092: Can’t blame the ref when you miss that maja chance. But what I can say. Where has 5mins added come from. And why is it only ever 5+ when we’re winning

@LiamWBA98: Coached it well Mason, players let him down with finishing the chances for yet another week.

@BogsAlf: I cannot be more behind this guy. The blueprint he’s put in place is there for anyone with eyes to see, we just need to get to that next level in the final third. Up the Albion

@MChambers93: @FootballCliches can 1-0 be deemed a dangerous scoreline? The only dangerous scoreline possible is 2-0 right? You need to have a cushion and therefore leave yourself open to complacency, but at the same time 3-1 doesn’t feel like a dangerous scoreline. In any case, surely not 1-0

@0wenWB4: Wow! What can you even say? Another game where we don’t get the result that the performance deserved. Really encouraging how comfortable we were against a side with so much quality but when you don’t take your chances, all it takes is one up the other end. #wba

@Mikeyjohnston23: Conceded 93rd min equaliser to Leicester 1-1. So disappointing should of won. Everyone played really well but just couldn’t take our chances. That Iling-Junior goal was special 😮‍💨. That Maja open goal miss is questionable. Anyways next game on Wednesday Vs Norwich Uta🔵⚪ #wba

@TheBaggiesBible: One point from the last three games is dog s**t considering how we played across 270 minutes. Not being able to get anything from them will be the difference in us finishing top six vs finishing mid table sadly. We genuinely concede a lot of late goals at home don’t we? If the margin is one goal I expect us to concede and have done for long time now. Years in fact. Is that a mentality thing? Could we as fans be doing more? Is it just an Albion thing? God only knows. Goodnight. #WBA

@albion_gaming: What’s most disappointing is that we all knew that was going to happen. It was obvious. I was hoping with all the improvements we’ve made to our defence that we might have been able to hold on. But no. Of Course not. #WBA

@danwba2011: We play like we did tonight for the rest of the season we will definitely get play offs. We just need a lot of finishing practice. It’s actually great to see is creating chances and having shots instead of trying to walk it in #wba

@spunge84:
Superb for 90 mins.
Subs de-stabilised us.
Maja cost us.
Onto the next.
#WBA

@LeeMWickstead: Albion played very well. Soaked up early pressure. Scored a wonderful goal. Missed chances to end the game. Conceded late. Ultimately, got what we deserved for not closing the game when we had chances. Feels like a defeat – but overall positive. Onwards #wba
